One of the Poppy Sweeting side relationship quests has you speak to Dorran and complete a small puzzle using the moonstone and two pillars. During the quest, A Bird in the Hand, you will need to look at the door for the correct symbols and then light those symbols up using the pillars.
This short walkthrough will show you exactly how to complete the puzzle.
How to Solve A Bird in the Hand Puzzle
To solve the Bird in the Hand puzzle, you need to take note of the symbols that light up on the door when you place the moonstone in the middle pillar. These symbols need to have the shadow from the lights directly on them.
To do this, use Accio on one of the two pillars and pull them to the opposite side of the symbol. The light will shine on the center pillar, the one with the moonstone, and cast a shadow on the symbol. Once done properly, the symbol should light up.
Now that you’ve done it to one symbol do the exact same step for the next symbol. You only need to do these two.
The door should open immediately after you’ve lined up the second shadow properly. Dorran will then tell you to proceed without him.
If this didn’t work, you likely have lit up the wrong symbol or missed it slightly. One of the symbols looks a lot like the others, so make sure to pay attention to the subtle differences. ‘
And that’s how you complete the puzzle! It is quite simple once you understand how it works.
Hot & Cold Puzzle
There will be another puzzle later on when you explore for a bit. This puzzle revolves around two plates that you need to place cubes on. Once you place these cubes, you will have to hit them with a fire spell and an ice spell, respectively.
You’ll be able to tell which one is which by the symbols on them.
Use Revelio to find the cubes; they are around the room, and then Wingardium Leviosa them onto the plates.
