Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Build for Every Class

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a complex game that gives you complete freedom of trimming your character to create the perfect build. Unlike other D&Ds, choosing a starting class for your playstyle isn’t the end of the road. Instead, you must focus on races, sub-classes, sub-races, companions, and feats to create the best build ever.

Most of the time, the game will throw some of the toughest foes in front of you. Furthermore, it isn’t about fighting all the time; you must also prepare your party for talking your way out of various scenarios. So, before you can start your journey, you must do a little research and understand your personal preferences. The only problem is that there are over 12 classes and 48 sub-classes to get started. Therefore, this article provides the best builds for every class in BG3.

Best Builds for Every Class in BG3:

As you already know, there are over 12 classes and 48 sub-classes to choose from in the character creation menu. Moreover, the game gives you complete freedom to choose your party members, stats, feats, and skills to create the best build.

Secondly, you must choose from a huge variety of weapons and spells to complement your build. All this freedom is a bit overwhelming, especially when you must test out everything on your own. So, here are the best builds that you can create for every class in BG3:

Barbarian Best Build: Berserker

Barbarian Best Build: Berserker
  • Subclass: Berserker
  • Background: Soldier
  • Race: Dwarf
  • Skills: Athletics and Intimidation
  • Stats: Strength, Constitution
  • Subrace: Shield Dwarf
  • Weapon: Two-handed weapons

Barbarian is the strength-based class in the game. It is a character that can tank around some of the hardest battles in Baldur’s Gate 3. To create the best Berserker build, you must start as a Barbarian and stick to the basics until you reach level 3.

Next, choose the Berserker sub-class at level 3 to unlock the Enraged Throw ability. This ability gives you extra damage to thrown attacks, making you invincible until you reach level 4.

At this point, you must choose the Tavern Brawler feat to gain even more damage output on your thrown, unarmed, and improvised attacks. Finally, you must focus on upgrading your Strength and Constitution attributes to get huge damage boosts just by throwing around your foes like dolls. If you stick to this roadmap, you will become truly invincible by the time you reach the endgame sequence.

Sorcerer Best Build: Draconic Bloodline

Sorcerer Best Build: Draconic Bloodline
  • Subclass: Draconic Bloodline
  • Background: Charlatan
  • Race: Dragonborn
  • Skills: Deception and Stealth
  • Stats: Charisma, Dexterity,
  • Weapons: Quarterstaff

If you are a fan of heft spell-casting in D&D games, Sorcerer is the way to go for you. Sorcerers are Charisma-based characters that focus on Persuasion, Intimidation, and Spell-casting abilities. What makes them more focused than Wizards is that you can customize almost every spell’s range, duration, and effect with your Metamagic abilities.

Moreover, Sorcerers depend on your sacred bloodlines, which you can unlock through races and sub-races. In this regard, the Draconic Bloodline is the best way to deal massive damage and become the party’s face. Next, you must choose all the fire-damage spells like Burning Hands and Fire Bolt at the first level.

As you progress through the story, you must focus on your Charisma and Dexterity or Intelligence to gain massive boosts on your Metamagic. As for the healing, you can leave it to the Shadowheart companion. Finally, you must choose Shield, Magic Missile, and Dancing Lights (leaving room for your choices in the remaining slots).

Bard Best Build: Valour

Bard Best Build: Valour
  • Subclass: College of Valour
  • Background: Guild Artisan
  • Race: Half-Elf
  • Skills: Insight and Persuasion
  • Spells: Healing Word, Thunderwave, Dissonant Whispers, Heroism
  • Stats: Charisma, Dexterity
  • Subrace: Wood Half-Elf

Bards are noble by nature; they are high-born Elves who are quite charismatic and supportive of the rest of the party. If you prefer a charming character, you should start as the Bard class (check our Class Tier List). Next, your goal is to trim your character as a support player and choose the companions from the Soldier, Rogue, and Wizard classes.

This way, you can become the talking face of the party, handle the non-combat situations, play your role in fights, and let others do the fighting. In this regard, you must start with the College of Valour sub-class and get spells like Mass Healing Word and Counter Spell.

Once you reach level 6, you should choose Magical Secrets. Finally, you can get spells like Blade Ward, Dancing Lights, Feather Fall, and Thunderwave for the rest of the game.

Cleric Best Build: Life Domain

Cleric Best Build: Life Domain
  • Subclass: Life Domain
  • Background: Acolyte
  • Race: Elf
  • Skills: Insight and Religion
  • Stats: Wisdom, Constitution
  • Subrace: High Elf

Clerics are among the best healers in Baldur’s Gate 3. Mostly, people avoid choosing this class because they prefer a combat-oriented build. However, what they don’t know is that Clerics can easily throw a few hard punches as well. Moreover, another benefit of being a Cleric is that you don’t have to rely on Shadowheart for healing, vacating the spot for a fighter.

Once you start as a Cleric, you must choose between the Life Domain and the Light Domain. While the Light Domain has its perks, its powers are no match against the Life Domain. It grants you the ability to heal everyone in your party, get more hit points, and revive dead companions.

Lastly, you can become the talking face of your party with your smooth talking skills. So, leave the fighting to the Barbarians and Fighters of your party while you provide a significant supporting role.

Druid Best Build: Circle of the Moon

Druid Best Build: Circle of the Moon
  • Subclass: Circle of the Moon
  • Background: Outlander
  • Race: Dwarf
  • Skills: Animal Handling and Nature
  • Stats: Wisdom, Constitution, Dexterity
  • Subrace: Gold Dwarf
  • Weapons: Club, Quarterstaff

Druids are infamous for their shape shifting abilities. While you can still cast a few spells to tackle close encounters, your main strength lies in your nature shifting abilities. Moreover, you can also become a utility member of your party with your healing and buffing capabilities.

Once you start as a Druid, the next step is to level up and choose the Circle of the Moon subclass. This subclass improves your shape shifting abilities and unlocks the bear form and Sabre Tiger. So, you can be quite destructive by following this path.

As for your spells, you don’t need anything other than healing and Moonbeam for some lightning damage. Similarly, you can rely on feats like War Caster, Lucky, and Sentinel to support your spells and shape shifting. However, Clerics aren’t great talkers, so you should include at least a Bard or Paladin in your party.

Paladin Best Builds: Oath of Vengeance

Paladin Best Build: Oath of Vengeance
  • Subclass: Oath of Vengeance
  • Background: Soldier
  • Race: Tiefling
  • Skills: Athletics and Intimidation
  • Stats: Strength, Charisma
  • Subrace: Zariel Tiefling
  • Weapons: Sword or Shield and one hand

Paladins are like the Special Forces of Baldur’s Gate 3. It is an extremely versatile class that supports the rest of the party and is capable of bringing down a huge horde of foes. So, if you really want to become the knight in shining armor, you should start as a Paladin.

Once you start your adventures, the next step is to level up and choose the Oath of Vengeance subclass. The next step is to choose your feats and fighting styles, as they pretty much define your build. So, you should choose Defense or Protection as your Fighting style to get boosts in your defensive attributes.

Similarly, you should choose Tough, Sentinel, and Shield Master as your feats to become invincible on the battlefield. Finally, Paladins also get a huge variety of spells at their disposal. While most of these spells are combat-related, you can still get some for utilities. For example, you can choose the Cure Wounds for healing and Compelled Duel or Command to control your enemies.

However, you must stick to your oaths of defeating the greater evil and no mercy for the wicked. Otherwise, you will become an Oathbreaker, and your buffs will be altered for the rest of the game.

Ranger Best Build: Gloom Stalker

Ranger Best Build: Gloom Stalker
  • Subclass: Gloom Stalker Ranger
  • Background: Outlander
  • Race: Elf
  • Skills: Stealth, Perception,
  • Stats: Dexterity, Wisdom,
  • Subrace: Wood Elf
  • Weapons: Longbow

The Rangers are like the Elves from the Lord of the Rings series. They are nature lovers whose main strength lies in ranged combat. So, you are a natural archer, and so is your preferred weapon type. However, you also get a few extra choices that will truly alter the shape of your party.

Once you start as a Ranger, you must then choose between Natural Explorer and Favored Enemy. Your choice here will determine all your next upgrades, so choose wisely. For this build, I recommend that you go with the Natural Explorer to get the Fire Resistance ability.

Next, you should choose the Archery Fighting Style to get +2 damage on all ranged attacks. This way, you can become the stealth fighter that you have been planning.

Over the course of the game, you will get resistance against Poison and Frost, as it is crucial for the second Act. Lastly, you can get the True Strike and Misty Step spells for starters and get healing and Pass Without Trace for better stealth.

Rogue Best Build: Thief

Rogue Best Build: Thief
  • Subclass: Thief
  • Background: Urchin
  • Race: Elf
  • Skills: Stealth, Acrobatics
  • Stats: Dexterity, Wisdom
  • Subrace: Wood Elf
  • Weapons: Dagger

You will find several stereotypical characters in different Baldur’s Gate 3 classes. For example, the Rogue class is your typical thief turned hero from almost every medieval movie. Though the Rogue class is pretty similar to a Ranger, but it comes with enhanced stealth capabilities and sneaking maneuvers.

Once you start as a Rogue player, the next step is to take the Thief class, as it further boosts your sneaking and stealth. Moreover, you will also get a bonus Cunning Action ability for the same turn. Moreover, you can also be swift in dodging attacks and taking falls, thanks to the Uncanny Dodge and Evasion upgrades.

As for your feats, you must choose Dual Wielder, Alert, and Tough at levels 4, 8, and 12 respectively. These traits will provide you with the required buffs to become a powerful fighter of your party. However, you can’t rely on your own attacks only, so you should get a Barbarian, Soldier, and Healer as your companions.

Warlock Best Build: Fiend

Warlock Best Build: Fiend
  • Subclass: Fiend
  • Background: Sage
  • Race: Half-Elf
  • Spells: Eldritch Blast, Scorching Ray, Fireball, Blade Ward, and Mage Hand
  • Skills: Charisma & Intelligence
  • Stats: Charisma, Dexterity, Stealth
  • Subrace: High Half-Elf
  • Weapons: Quarterstaff

If you can’t choose between spellcasting and melee combat, and you don’t want to be a Paladin, Warlock is your only option. Warlocks are like ancient beings who master spellcasting with a touch of Charisma and Dexterity. Moreover, they are also great at stealth attacks and sneaky maneuvers.

Once you start as a Warlock, you must choose the Fiend at level 1. Next, you can choose from several Eldritch Invocations as you upgrade your character. However, you are free to choose, as each option will complement your build. Still, if you want our opinion, you can go with Agonizing Blast, Repelling Blast, Armour of Shadows, Book of Ancient Secrets, Minions of Chaos, and Life Drinker.

As for your melee attacks, you must start with the Pact of the Blade. This upgrade will continue to grant you various melee and ranged buffs as you progress through the levels. Similarly, Warlocks are Mages by blood, so spells are your natural talents. The spell selection isn’t as crucial, but it can surely give you the upper hand in various battles. So, get yourself spells like Eldritch Blast, Scorching Ray, Fireball, Blade Ward, and Mage Hand to become invincible. Lastly, you can get feats like War Caster, Resilient, and Lucky for your level upgrades.

Wizard Best Builds: School of Evocation

Wizard Best Build: School of Evocation
  • Subclass: Evocation School
  • Background: Sage
  • Race: Elf
  • Skills: Wisdom, Religion
  • Spells: Fire Bolt, Poison Spray, Mage Hand, Fireball, Counterspell, Cone of Cold
  • Stats: Intelligence, Dexterity
  • Subrace: High Elf
  • Weapons: Quarterstaff

As the name suggests, Wizards belong to the spellcasting classes. Although they don’t provide the same buffs as a Sorcerer, but they are great at learning spells. So, you can get almost any spell and permanently remember it, even from the scrolls. However, you should first play as a Sorcerer and save the Wizard class for your second playthrough.

Wizards aren’t great at melee combat, so your only option is to learn as many damage spells as you can. Fortunately, the list of spells that you can learn is quite huge. For instance, you can get the Fire Bolt, Poison Spray, Mage Hand, and Minor Illusion spells for your damage attacks.

Similarly, higher-level spells like Burning Hands, Magic Missile, Mage Armour, Greater Invisibility, and Cone of Cold are enough to get you through the first Act. What’s even more interesting is that you don’t need to stick to this list, as you can learn unlimited spells and change them at any time. In short, if you are planning to become a Wizard, you should start with the Evocation School and get as many spells as you can find.

Monk Best Build: Way of Shadow

Monk Best Build: Way of Shadow
  • Subclass: Way of Shadow
  • Background: Soldier
  • Race: Elf
  • Skills: Athletics, Acrobatics
  • Stats: Dexterity, Wisdom
  • Subrace: Wood Elf
  • Weapons: Unarmed

Monks can easily be the most powerful or the weakest class in Baldur’s Gate 3. So, it all depends on how you wish to play the game. If you are a fan of martial arts, melee combat, and lightning-fast maneuvers, Monk is the best class for you.

The main benefit of playing as a Monk is that it offers ultimate versatility. While you can’t wear sturdy armor or wield humongous weapons, you can use several abilities at once. In this regard, you must choose the Way of Shadow to get additional stealth bonuses and unlock Ki Points.

Next, you must trim your character by choosing various upgrades at each level. For example, you can get the Martial Arts upgrade at level 1, Deflect Missiles at level 3, and Extra Attack at level 5. If you make the right choices, you can easily create the fastest and strongest build in BG3.

Furthermore, you can consume your Ki points to unlock special abilities or even gain the ones that you lost during upgrades. As for the feats, Lucky, Mobile, and Sentinel seem like the most obvious options. In short, if you are playing as a Monk, you should play it right or change your class.

Conclusion:

Baldur’s Gate 3 gives you complete freedom to create your character. You can choose everything from your build’s class to abilities to race and even attributes. Moreover, you will unlock better abilities and upgrades as you level up. However, all this information is a bit overwhelming, especially for newcomers. Therefore, this article provides a roadmap to create the best build for every class in BG3.
