There is another possibility. If you have the Misty Step spell by any chance. Then you can teleport yourself to his bag which is on the far West Well. Grab this bag and simply throw it to him.
The bag has two Misty Step scrolls in it, so you can keep one for yourself which will help you in teleporting back safely. Once he is out of the field, you can speak to him and he will head back to his town. Also, you can get a reward from him which will be a Scroll of Invisibility.
