If you do have the explosive material on you then you are good to go, if you don’t have it then you can obtain it from a Deep Gnome Philomeen.
Upon freeing the parties from the cave, a scene will be played and you will have to choose the side either with Nere or with Gnomes.
Blowing the Rubble
The quest can be started by interacting with Sergeant Thrinn when you return him his missing boots. This will lead you to the Grymforge where the quest can be initialized. After that, you can choose to speak with one of the Gnomes in the cave.
If you have already freed a Gnome from the windmill in Blighted Village then you can speak to Barcus Wroot. If not then you can speak with Lunkbug. Speaking with any of them will result in starting the Save Gnome Quest.
Now, you have to use the explosives to clear the rubble. If you already have the explosives on you then you can directly use them on the rubble. Alternatively, you can obtain the Runepowder from a Deep Gnome Philomeen who is in the docks of Grymforge.
Once you have the explosives simply aim and throw it at the Rubble and let it explode. Make sure that no other Gnome gets hurt during the explosion.
As soon as the rubble gets cleared, Nere and Gnomes will emerge from the cave-in.
Saving the Gnomes
When they come out, Nere will be angry with the Gnomes as they all get stuck due to the mistake of Gnomes and will try to kill them. This happens during the dialogue. Now, to save Gnomes you will have to take sides of them by choosing the option “Stop! No more innocents will die today, Nere”.
After that you are gonna choose the option “Of course I care. I can’t let these Gnomes suffer”. Soon After that, the fight will start and you will have to face Nere and the Duergars. You can also call Elder Brithvar on your side, but this needs to be done before the combat.
Now, the best way to win this fight is to push as many enemies as you can in the lava or you can also try disarming them. This will help you focus on the major target which is True Soul Nere.
Once the combat is finished, you will need to persuade the remaining Duergar in order to fully free the Gnomes. Once Duergar leaves, the Gnomes will be free and they will give you a little explanation. They will also give you a reward in the form of Gold.
Can You Save the Gnomes Without Killing Nere?
Unfortunately, that’s not possible. Because, when you choose to take the side of Gnomes and go against Nere, this will instantly result in combat between your team, Nere, and Duergar. You will have to fight against Nere and Duergar to save the Gnomes.
And if you choose to take side with Nere then all the Gnomes at the spot will be dead. Whatever your decision, the best way to win the fight is by pushing most of the enemies into the lava. This way they will instantly die and you can keep all of your focus on the main target.
How Do You Save the Gnome Windmill in Baldur’s Gate 3?
There is a Gnome Barcus Wroot who is tied up by the group of Goblins on a windmill in Blighted Village. This windmill can be found in the North West corner of the Blighted Village. There you can interact with Fezzerk or you can also kill him to reach the Gnome.
If you kill Fezzerk, the rest of the goblins will run away and you can easily free the Gnome. At the back of the windmill, there is a Brake Lever that can stop the windmill. Stop the windmill and free the Gnome.
