One of the side quests in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to Save the True Soul Nere. This is one tricky side quest that involves making your way into the cave-in. The side quest gets added to your journal as soon as you arrive in Grymforge.
True Soul Nere is stuck in a cave with two other men. You need to take him out of the cave before the time runs out and he dies because of the poisonous gas. There are a few ways that you can save him.

Saving Nere in Baldur’s Gate 3
Once you have arrived in Grymforge, you will get to know that Nere and a few other men are trapped in a cave-in. Speak to Sergeant Thrinn and he will tell you about the explosion which resulted in trapping Nere and Gnomes in a cave-in.
As soon as you have completed your conversation with Sergeant Thrinn, you will be able to interact with the rubble and speak to Nere, but this won’t show you the way to save him.
You can speak with two persons to advance in the quest. You can either speak to Deep Gnome Slaves or Elder Brithvar. After speaking to any of them, you will have to find Deep Gnome Philomeen. She will tell you the exact way of entering the cave and saving Nere.
Finding Philomeen
Philomeen is not anywhere around the cave. To find her, you will need to head towards the dock area of Grymforge. Follow that waterfront on the left side and keep on moving towards the corner until you see some dead bodies of Gnome.
You will notice two Duergars pushing the bodies in the water, reach those Duergars to unlock the big doors beside the bodies. Once you have entered the room, look for a fireplace and there will be a secret button. Press that button to open a secret passage.
In the next room, fight with Oozes and defeat them. Move to the top of the room and take the left side of the stairs. Be ready for another fight. Once cleared, look for a large gap to jump across it. Enter through the double doors between the braziers to find Philomeen inside.
Philomeen will be holding a bucket of Runepowder and ready to set everything on fire. You need to convince her and take that Runepowder in your inventory.
Saving Nere
Return back to the cave-in where Nere and Gnomes are trapped. Put Runepowder in your inventory. Now, before freeing Nere, if you want to fight with him then speak with the guard Elder Brithvar. If you do not speak to him then you will have to fight with Nere as well as Sergeant Thrinn’s Man and with Brithvar’s forces.
Now, aim at the rubble where Nere is trapped and throw the Runepowder. This will get stuck to that rubble. Use a ranged fire attack at the Runepowder to make an explosion and free up Nere. As soon as the explosion happens, Nere and Gnomes will appear. Nere will kill one of the Gnomes when they all come out.
Now, you will have three choices, you can choose one of them. You can take sides with Nere and True Souls and fight with Brithvar’s Forces. Take sides with Brithvar and fight with Nere and Thrinn. Or take sides with no one and fight Nere, Thrinn, and Brithvar.
How Do You Clear the Rubble to Save Nere?
To clear out the rubble, you just simply need to make an explosion. This can be done with the Runepowder or a satchel of Smokepowder. If you have any of these items then you are good to go.
If you do not have it on you then you will have to find Philomeen who is in the dock area of Grymforge and convince her not to use the Runepowder, instead, hand it over to you. Then you can simply use it for an explosion in the rubble.
Should I Side With Nere Baldur’s Gate 3?
Taking the side of Nere or any other party after saving Nere from the cave is totally up to you. If you are planning to save Deep Gnomes then you should go against Nere and kill him.
Otherwise, he will kill all the Gnomes. If you want to save them then you will also have to convince Brithvar to let them go.
