One of the first choices you have in Remnant: From the Ashes, is the choice of Archetype, or in other words, your characters starting class. This Archetype is fairly important early on, as it will more or less dictate your playstyle early in the game. So, for that reason, I have created this article to see what the best Archetype is in Remnant: From the Ashes.
Alright, so without making you wait, what is the best Archetype in Remnant: From the Ashes? The current best Archetype is the Ex-Cultist due in large part to their spirit trait, which speeds up mod power generation (essentially your abilities).
Of course, the Ex-Cultist might not be the best pick for you. Maybe you prefer a different playstyle and aren’t worried about min-maxing the game and only playing a certain way. Whatever your reason, we will be going over the other Archetypes below as well so you can get a general understanding of each of them.
Table of Contents
Scrapper Archetype
The Scrapper Archetype is the melee/close-ranged-based Archetype. Although you can still do damage from afar, the Scrapper is meant to be an up-close and personal Archetype and is strongest with a melee weapon or shotgun. Scrappers also get an armor set bonus that increases damage to enemies that are within a certain range of them, making them do even more damage in a scrap (pun intended).
Scrappers start with the most vigor (HP) out of all the Archetypes. Those who play the Scrapper will also be considered the tank Archetype of the group (each Archetype has its own role), but that doesn’t mean the Scrapper can’t also deal damage. Their mod, hotshot makes their bullets set enemies on fire, doing damage-over-time which can be very advantageous during a boss fight.
For traits, the Scrapper has the warrior trait, which increases melee damage by 1% for every skill point in it. This makes the Scrapper the de-facto melee class for Remnant: From the Ashes. If you want to be the tanky, always in the heat of battle class for your group, Scrapper is the way to go.
Ex-Cultist Archetype
Cultists are considered the best Archetype in the game, mainly due to their amazing starting trait that allows them to increase mod generation. With this boon, they are able to cast abilities more often, which is something every player would love to do. Add on the fact that their set gives them even more mod regeneration, and you’ve got a class that can spam abilities way more than other Archetypes.
Although considered the best Archetype, the Cultists are also the support/healer class in Remnant: From the Ashes. This is because their starter mod is an AOE heal. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck healing if you play Cultists, you can still do plenty of damage, it’s just that you are the Archetype best suited for it.
If you want the strongest Archetype with the strongest trait, or would want to play as a healer in Remnant: From the Ashes, then the ex-cultist is for you.
Hunter Archetype
Now for the final Archetype, Hunters. If you’ve been following the guide so far, you might have noticed something. Scrappers were tanks, Ex-Cultists were healers, so that means…. ah yes, Hunters are the damage dealers. Moreover, they are the stealthy, long-range, DPS class with an emphasis on critical strikes.
The Hunter trait is Shadow Walker, which reduces the aggro range of monsters. It is pretty bad, and most people consider it to be the worst beginning trait, but there are some uses for it, albeit niche uses. Also, the Hunter Set gives you extra damage to enemy weak spots as long as you are a certain distance away (basically the opposite of the Scrapper).
So if you want a long-range DPS class, choose the Hunter Archetype.
Final Note
To be 100% honest with you, the choice of Archetype or class doesn’t really matter that much. You will be able to unlock everything you need, later on, so you could very well be a DPS Ex-Cultist even though that is supposed to be a support class. That is why most people consider the Ex-Cultist to be the best starter Archetype because it has the best trait, which is basically all that matters.
Hopefully that helps you choose your first class in Remnant: From the Ashes!
