The 5 Best Mage Armors/Gear in Skyrim (And How to Get Them)

Mage armor in Skyrim is incredibly easy to come by, just a kill a single level five doofus and you’ve got a full set. However, in this list of the best 5 mage armors in Skyrim, I will show you where to find the best armor sets and best mage gear for your Skyrim mage playthrough.

P.S.: If you end up becoming a stealth archer (I get it trust me), head over to our list of the best bows in Skyrim.

All of these sets of mage armor I’m about to show you are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they are extremely powerful to boot. So without further ado, the best mage armors in Skyrim!

5. Master Robes

How to Get: The Master Robes can be bought from teachers at the College of Winterhold once the Dragonborn has reached level 32. Proficiency in any school does not affect whether the robes are sold. They can also be bought at Radiant Raiment, once Dragonborn’s magic is at a certain level. Finally, they can also be bought from Enthir and Khajiit Traders around Skyrim.

First on the list of best armor and gear for mages in Skyrim is Master Robes.

Master Robes are robes that are worn by all of the high ranking mages and function similarly to novice mage robes in that they have multiple variations for each different school of magic.

Each variation reduces the amount of Magicka requires to cast certain spells including the base enchantment which increases Magicka regeneration by 150%. Which means being able to spam a ton of Destruction spells until that pesky Skeever dies.

Besides the Archmages robes, these robes are the best mage gear one can get without enchanting.

4. Morokei

How to Get: The mask is obtained after defeating the dragon priest Morokei. He can be found in the end of the quest “The Staff of Magnus” inside Labyrinthian.

In terms of helmets or headgear for Mages, Morokei is the cream of the crop. Morokei increases your Magicka regeneration by 100%, increasing the number of spells you can cast during a fight.

Pair this sick Mage mask with items like Archmages robes and the Ring of The Erudite and you have nearly unlimited Magicka.

Admittedly, I love this mask because of how cool it looks and it also makes roleplaying Dragon Priests easier.

3. Ring of The Erudite

How to Get: Complete the quest Blood Magic.

The Ring of The Erudite might not be the best overall piece of magic gear in the game, but it certainly is the best ring in Skyrim for any aspiring mage.

Of the many effects this ring gives you, the most beneficial is the fact it increases your overall Magicka regeneration but unlike other Magicka regeneration items, increases your natural regen.

You can read more about it here but basically all it does is make Magicka regeneration items even better than before. So items like Morokei or Mage robes get a steroid enhancement.

Sadly, the only way for you to get it includes becoming a vampire, so any mage not trying to become one can’t acquire the ring.

2. Miraak’s Armor Set

How to Get: Miraak’s Robes can be acquired from the remains of Miraak at the conclusion of the quest “At the Summit of Apocrypha,” along with his maskbootsglovessword, and staff.

Miraak’s complete armor set is close to the best armor set and gear available for a mage. Battlemages also do really well with this mage gear.

The reason Miraak’s armor set is so good is that the enchantment on the clothes gives the wearer a chance to absorb spells, which is incredibly powerful against spell casters.

If you stack enough bonuses on top of this, you can actually get 100% spell absorption.

Sadly, conjuration mages should stay away from this armor set because the spell absorption will mess up their conjuration spells.

1. Secret Archmage Robes

How to get: Watch the video above.

When you finally complete the College of Winterhold questline you get a cozy set of mage robes that were used by the old Archmage himself. These robes come with really good enchantments which bolster your overall Magicka regeneration and decrease the Magicka cost of spells.

BUT, I bet you didn’t know that there is a different set of robes available if you have the unofficial Skyrim patch installed. These replicas are basically the same except they don’t take up a head slot. Although sadly this means you don’t get the cool helmet.

Because this secret set frees up a helmet slot, you can put wear any type of enchanted helmet with your archmage robes, something that the original set couldn’t do. I like to use this in conjunction with Morokei, but it is up to you.

If you want to know where to get the secret archmage robes, check out the video above. It walks you through the entire thing.
