What Is the Golden Walnut in Stardew Valley
Once you have helped Willy in repairing his boat, you can finally purchase a boarding ticket that would grant you a chance to embark on a journey towards Ginger Island. This island is an independent region from where the Pelican Town is situated; having its separate, enormous map.
Being an independent region as it is, Ginger Island has its own currency which is called the Golden Walnuts. The Golden Walnuts are scattered around the island; some are lying in plain sight while some would require some effort to be able to acquire–for instance, killing fiends, farming, fishing, and finishing quests.
A total of 130 Golden Walnuts are obtainable in Ginger Island. Considering how big the island is, finding all of them is undeniably such a challenging task. That being said, here is where you can find these peculiar currencies on the island.
Locations of Golden Walnut in Stardew Valley
Island East
The less complicated way of finding Golden Walnut in Stardew Valley is simply looking through bushes, and every nook and cranny. On the eastern region of the island, two of the walnuts could be found by just following Leo into his hut.
Take a quick look around the jungle and you will find one by a bush along the path. The other one could be found inside his hut, although it would prove quite tricky. What you have to do is hit the tree inside his hut and voila! You have another Golden Walnut.
Through exploration, you can also find one by inspecting the bushes below the Gem Bird Shrine.
With a little shrewdness, you can get another three Golden Walnuts. If you notice an altar by the staircase on the way to Leo’s hut, offer a banana. By doing so, a gorilla would appear and grant you the three Golden Walnuts.
The last group of walnuts that could be obtained from the eastern side of the island might need some time to be able to collect. You might have come across Gem Bird Shrines upon checking bushes for Golden Walnuts. To work out this puzzle, what you have to do is place gemstones on the respective shrine where the gemstone is dropped.
As an example, if a gemstone is dropped on the northern part of the island, you have to put it on a shrine that corresponds to its place of origin. What makes this a long-term task is that Gem Birds only appear on rainy days (maybe, unless it is a rainy season). But, don’t worry, it will all be worth it since it will reward you with 5 Golden Walnuts.
Island West
The western region of Ginger Island is, delightfully, a haven of Golden Walnuts. By simply exploring this part of the island, you can forage Golden Walnuts–just make sure to keep your eyes sharp–from the following locations: east and south of the farm’s Parrot Express station; alongside the cliff by the east of Tiger Slime Grove; west of the Parrot Express station, just across the bridge; behind the Mahogany Tree in the Tiger Slime Grove; by the ocean past Qi’s Walnut Room; western coast towards Qi’s Walnut Room; by the pond situated west of the farm; lastly, inside the shipwreck at the southwest side of the beach.
As mentioned earlier, you can also gather Golden Walnuts by farming. All you have to do is harvest crops from the Ginger Island farm once in a while, particularly those that do not regrow and do not require a scythe to be harvested. You can collect up to 5 Golden Walnuts by farming here.
A total of 5 Golden Walnuts could also be gathered by mining the Mussel Nodes. Also, you might have spotted along the way a curved cliff with a palm tree. Digging the corner tile where the eastern and northern cliff touches one another, will reveal the Journal Scrap #6.
In return, you will get a single Golden Walnut in Stardew Valley. Another walnut is waiting for you once you unravel the Journal Scrap #4 buried beneath the sands from north of Birdie’s hut.
Completing the Pirate’s Wife Quest and Simon Says Puzzle would reward you with 5 and 3 Golden Walnuts, respectively. Succeeding in the “whack-a-mole” puzzle found south of Birdie’s hut also helps you receive another walnut.
You would also be one less walnut away from collecting 130 by fighting off and slaying slimes from the Tiger Slime Grove. Lastly, by delivering accurately the Gourmand Frog’s requests, you can collect up to 15 Golden Walnuts.
Island North
Similarly, the northern part of Ginger Island is abundant with Golden Walnuts. Start by exploring west of the entrance to find a hidden passage leading to a grove sheltering a walnut bush. Wander to the west and east of the north steps of the dig sites and you will find a total of 3 Golden Walnuts.
There are also walnuts at the southeast and northeast Volcano Dungeon’s entrance; by the river of lava at the entrance of Volcano Dungeon; and the far northwest corner of the map, west of the volcano, towards another hidden passage.
Several dig spots in this region of the island also hide Golden Walnuts. The first one is located right inside the entrance of Island North. At the center of the rocks which form a circle, a Golden Walnut could be unearthed. Another circular rock formation that lies on the far northwest of the map, where Leo sometimes goes, also holds another walnut.
East of the Volcano’s entrance, there’s also a circle of both pebbles and plants wherein Golden Walnuts could be dug up inside. A similar-looking group of stones found north of the Dig Site is also a walnut-digging site.
Deviating from circular rock formations, there are also dig sites revealing Golden Walnuts: one is a grassy spot and a patch of sand just inside the entrance; look around a little, there’s also a diamond-shaped formation of flowers amidst the grassy space; and at the southeast of the Island Field Office is a different-looking patch of sand.
Speaking of the Island Field Office, completing the Large Animal and Snake Collection; donating Mummified Frog and Mummified Bat; and finishing the Purple Flowers Island Survey and Purple Starfish Survey will reward you, altogether, with 13 Golden Walnuts.
Island South
Once the beach resort is built, you can fish in a starfish-shaped pool. The first time you fish in this area will yield a single Golden Walnut in Stardew Valley. By finishing the puzzle at the southeast part which consists of tuning a Flute Block, you can get 5 Golden Walnuts. Another puzzle will also be available in the Pirate Cove, particularly on a non-rainy night after 8 pm, which will yield 3 walnuts.
Strolling around this region will also work on collecting the walnuts. In the southeast, four yellow starfish form a diamond; and dig up its center to collect the walnut. Right after you ascend the stairs going to Island North, turn right at once and proceed south towards the tree which hides a secret route leading to a walnut bush on the upper cliff of Island South.
Accessing the Pirate Cove would also reveal an exposed sand surrounded by kegs. Dig up the sand and there goes another Golden Walnut.
The Rest of Ginger Island
The remaining 6 Golden Walnuts could be found, technically, anywhere within the island. By fishing in any body of water in Ginger Island, you can acquire up to 5 Golden Walnuts. On the other hand, the remaining one would be from the very first Golden Coconut that you would ask Clint to open for you. Note that Golden Coconut can be found anywhere on the island.
Parrot Hints on Walnut Locations
Assuming that you had no other way, or had no time, to read on tips where to locate Golden Walnuts, you do not have to worry much since Leo’s Parrot could drop hints as you interact with it. Sometimes, it could give vague hints; it could also tell how many could be unearthed from a certain spot. However, out of the 130 Golden Walnuts, the parrot could only give hints for the 123 walnuts.
Uses of Golden Walnuts
Mostly, the Golden Walnuts are used in exchange for access to the different parts of Ginger Island. Specifically, they are used to unlock the following locations: Island North, Island West, Ginger Island Farmhouse, Island Trader Shop, Volcano Bridge, Volcano Exit Shortcut, Island Resort, and the Parrot Express.
Aside from unlocking passage to certain routes, Golden Walnuts are also spent to have a Farmhouse Mailbox and a Farm Obelisk. It is also expended to successfully repair the bridge for you to be able to go to the Island Dig Site.
The remaining walnuts could be exchanged for Qi Gems, too.
