The most interesting thing about the new Baldur’s Gate 3 is that you can recruit several party members to accompany you on your adventures. Usually, games like Diablo 4 and other CRPGs can start to feel isolated because you are on your own most of the time. However, things are a bit different in BG3. You can enjoy teaming up with your buddies in the CO-OP mode, or you can join hands with AI crew members.
The benefit of these AI companions is that you get access to several unique options and rewards. Moreover, you can cover your build’s flaws with these helping hands. But there is a limit to how many companions you can recruit at once. Therefore, this article explains all you need to know on this topic and much more.

List of All Companions in BG3:
As of the latest BG3 update, there are 10 available companions in the game. Among them, 6 are permanent crew members that remain available all the time. The remaining 4 companions are temporary and only become available in certain quests and areas.
Each recruitable character is unique: has a different class, stats, likes and dislikes, and abilities. So, you must carefully choose your active team members, as they will define the outcome of most of your battles.
The good news is that the recruited companions will level with you, and you can always respec them to your liking. So, make sure to study everything about them before including a companion in your party.

How Many Companions Can You Recruit?
Players have been hyped about the whole companionship concept in the new Baldur’s Gate 3. However, most of them were quickly disappointed when the game didn’t allow them to activate any more companions. This leads to the obvious question, ‘How many companions can you have at once?”
Well, there are certain rules behind this whole story. Otherwise, it won’t take long to swiftly pass through the Unforgivable Lands with hundreds of crew members. Here’s a list of all the recruitment rules that you must keep in mind when making your selection:
- You can recruit all 10 companions after you find them and complete their requirements.
- A party can only have 4 members, i.e., 1 player and 3 companions (including companions, other players, and hirelings)
- Hirelings are temporary companions that will only accompany you for a limited duration.
- You can deactivate one or all companions and replace them with other players and hirelings.
- Summoned units don’t count as party members, and they don’t increase the size of your party.
How to Increase the Maximum Party Size?
This news may not come as a surprise to most of you, but it was disappointing for us all. Sadly, the maximum party size or the allowed number of companions will remain limited to only 4 for the whole game. In other words, upgrading your party or increasing the maximum party size is impossible for now.
Fortunately, you can still work your way past this 4 member limit. For instance, you can take Glut when going to the Underdark region. This way, Glut, 2 other companions, and a summoned unit will accompany you through the area, increasing the maximum size by +1. Moreover, you can always try out mods and glitches if you feel short-handed most of the time.
However, these 4 members-only rules remain true for the current update; we are still waiting to see if the developers make any changes in future updates. If there are any such changes, we will surely be the first ones to let you know.
Conclusion:
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a team-based game that seems impossible without some helping hands. Fortunately, you can include several companions in your party to cover up the flaws in your build. However, the game doesn’t tell you exactly how many members you can activate at once.
