How to Divorce in Stardew Valley

Divorcing in Stardew Valley

Who would have thought that even in a peaceful and serene life-simulation game like Stardew Valley, love would not be as easy as storybooks tell us?

In Stardew Valley, divorcing your partner is another topic that you need to think about carefully. It might sound sad but we are sure that you have your reasons for doing this. And since you have already landed on this guide, it seems that you already have made up your mind.

Marriage

Aside from building a strong community by forming and establishing friendships with the other villagers, Stardew Valley also allows every player to find a potential spouse either from the bachelor and bachelorette candidates or by playing a co-op game.

Before you even propose to someone, you have to work hard to increase your friendship level. Once you have reached the required level and marrying is finally possible, then it is just the right time for you two to get married.

But after a few years of being together, everything just doesn’t work out. The thought of going your separate ways might cross your mind after several considerations. This is where divorce comes into the picture.

That being said, we made this brief guide to tell you everything that you need to know about getting divorced in Stardew Valley, and all the changes that you might experience in-game.

How to Divorce in Stardew Valley

Divorcing in Stardew Valley is actually simple. However, you should be ready to dump a good amount of money for this to be done. Therefore, make sure you are well-prepared before deciding and don’t just go on a whim.

The first thing that you have to do is look for Mayor Lewis’ house and travel your way there. Mayor Lewis resides in Pelican Town in the Mayor’s Manor.

Upon arriving, walk past the kitchens and look for the small notebook placed on a small cabinet. This is called Lewis’ Marriage Log. Interact with the log and a prompt will ask you, File for divorce? There is a 50,000g fee.

And yes, that is right. You have to pay a hefty amount of money which costs 50,000 gold in order to finalize and legalize this decision. But if you, for example, suddenly had a change of heart, you might still undo this on the same day. Don’t worry, your partner will not know about this.

Chances are that if you really want to undo this decision, make sure to arrive at the Mayor’s Manor before 10:00 PM.

Post-Divorce Changes

After you have filed your divorce, your partner will disappear from your house the next morning you wake up. This time, you are officially tagged as exes. Of course, after this life-changing decision, a lot of alterations and adjustments will have to take place between the two of you. As well as to your individual lives.
The first obvious change that you will notice is your ex-spouse’s residence. Since they have already left your farmhouse, they will now go back to their original residence.

Another one is the information written on the social tab. After your divorce, ex- will be added under the name of this particular villager. Aside from that, you will also clearly see that your friendship status between you two will go back to zero.

Moreover, your interaction with each other will also be affected. If you ever tried to give your ex-spouse a gift after the divorce, he or she will not accept it despite the quality and rarity of the item. Even though the gift is included in his or her loves and likes, the answer will remain no. Adding salt to the injury, your ex will also mention something about your failed relationship.

Plus, doing the Help, Wanted tasks and quests for these villagers will not grant and reward you any friendship points.

Child Custody

Another major change that you will encounter is child custody.

After your marriage, you and your spouse might or might not have decided to have a baby. But if you did and ended up divorcing in Stardew Valley each other, the children will be left with you in your farmhouse. But if you think that these kids are bringing you the memories of your past relationship and you want to give up these children, there is a way for this too.

This might sound cruel but dismissing the children is the only way.

Simply go to the Witch’s Hut in the Witch’s Swamp. Inside, you will see three shrines. Look for the Dark Shrine of Selfishness. Upon offering a Prismatic Shard to this shrine, your children will disappear from your farmhouse and will turn into doves. Their existence will totally be forgotten as if they were never part of the game.

Remarrying

Even though Stardew Valley has the option of divorcing your spouse, the game still doesn’t want you to stop believing in second chances. In fact, after the divorce, there might come a time when you would want to try again and marry someone else.

Marrying Another Person

At this point, you have to start over again by increasing the friendship level between you and your new prospective spouse by giving gifts and visiting. Once you have already reached 10 hearts, you will be able to propose by giving the Mermaid’s Pendant from the Old Mariner. After three days, you will become happily married again.

But the bitterness doesn’t end here. On the day of your wedding day, your ex-spouse will not attend the ceremony.

Marrying the Same Person

If you have come to the realization that you really would want to stay with your ex-spouse, then maybe shoot your shot for the second time. But the problem is, your ex-spouse won’t dare to talk to you or even receive the gifts. The only solution to that is magic!

In order for you to finally talk to your ex-spouse again as you used to, you should go to the Witch’s Hut in the Witch’s Swamp. Once you enter, you will see three shines standing before you. Look for the Dark Shrine of Memory. If you offer 30,000 gold, it will erase the memory of your ex-spouse.

Once done, the cold treatment will stop and the dialogue will reset to default.
