Engravings are one of the features that could give buffs and debuffs to Lost Ark characters. For an MMO game like Lost Ark, it is very possible to get lost in the myriad of quests, side quests, and various mechanics you would have to work with to ensure you become a meta player. However, Engravings are one of those features you must learn to capitalize on as their buffs could be quite important to your gameplay.

An Introduction to Engravings
As mentioned earlier, Engravings are features of the game that give you access to various buffs, such as dealing heavy damage or becoming a better healer. Engravings are mainly divided into three types:
Class Engravings
These types of Engravings are specific to each Advanced Class. Each Advanced Class has two Class Engravings which usually accentuates their abilities.
General/Combat/Battle Engravings
These are Engravings available to every Advanced Class. There are 49 of them in Lost Ark. These Engravings also help accentuate the abilities of the classes, but some come with downsides. A good example is Grudge which increases the damage you do against Bosses and increases the damage you take.
Malus/Penalty Engravings
These are negative engravings that could cause debuffs/disadvantages to your abilities. You can gain them mainly through Ability Stones and Accessories. They are not so dangerous as long as you don’t fill up a tier. You should watch out for the Defense Reduction Debuff, though.
Despite the considerable numbers of Engravings in the game, you only have two Engraving slots in your arsenal of skills. Every Engraving has three tiers (Lv. 1 – 3). You need to level them to Lv. 3 to gain more buffs/advantages from these Engravings. Each level has five nodes, and only when you’ve filled these five nodes can you move to the next level. This means to max out an Engraving, you need 15 Node Points.
How to Unlock Engravings
To get Engravings through Recipes, you need to have recipe pouches that contain recipe books. Reading the recipes inside these books unlocks Engravings. There are two types of pouches: Engraving Recipe Pouches and Engraving Recipe Selection Pouches. The former gives you a random Engraving while the latter allows you to select an Engraving of your choice.
You can get recipe books by playing endgame activities: Abyssal Dungeons, Guardian Raids, Cube Raids, Tower Raids, and Chaos Dungeons and Chaos Gate. Chaos Gates could also give Secret Maps, which contain the location of hidden dungeons on the continents. These dungeons could also contain Engraving recipes.
You should know that there are four types of recipes differentiated by their color and the color of their pouch. They include:
- Green/Uncommon
- Blue/Rare
- Purple/Epic
- Orange/Legendary.
However, getting Engravings from Recipes could be quite hard as you need to get twenty Uncommon recipes of one Engraving to unlock it.
How to get Engraving Points
After collecting the Engravings, you need to level them using Node Points to increase the buffs they provide. Apart from using the Recipe method mentioned above, there are two other methods:
- Recipe Books
- Accessories
- Ability Stones
You also unlock some from playing the Engravings Tutorial Quest. Let’s take a look at each of the major resources and how they work:
Recipes
As mentioned in the section above, you use 20 Uncommon recipes to unlock Engravings. However, to get Engraving Points using Recipes, you need 20 Rare recipes to unlock the first Level, 20, Epic Recipes to unlock the 2nd Level, and 20 Legendary Recipes to unlock the 3rd Level. By collecting all this, you’ve fully maxed out the Levels of the Engraving. This process is known as Learning the Engravings.
While this seems like a lot, the Engravings are account-wide, i.e. you only have to do it for a particular account. If you decide to level any other character on the same account, you do not have to go through the troublesome Engraving process all over again.
Ability Stones
You start getting Ability Stones around Level 30 when you encounter the Luterra Castle. There are three levels of Ability Stones: Rare, Epic, and, Legendary. These stones can help you gain Node Points to max out Engravings. The Rare Stones can give up to a maximum of 6 Node Points to one or two General Engravings and one Penalty Engraving. However, it doesn’t work for Class Engravings. You start getting these stones around Item Level 35.
The Epic stones give a maximum of 8 Engraving Points to one or two General Engravings and one Penalty Engraving. These stones are unlocked around Level 340. The Legendary stones give a maximum of 9 Node Points to 2 General Engravings and one Penalty Engraving. These stones are unlocked at Level 460. You can find both stones playing Chaos and Abyssal Dungeons.
Other good sources of Ability Stones include the Ghost Ship, Road to Faceting guide quest, Field Bosses, Chaos Dungeons, and Guardian Raids.
However, before you can use an Ability Stone, you need to visit an Ability Stone Cutter to facet the stone. There are three rows for the three Engravings an Ability Stone can affect. Each row has ten nodes. Every node must be present before you can use the Ability Stone. If you successfully add a node to the General Engravings (faceting), the success rate of getting a positive node next reduces by 10%. However, if the node is added to the Penalty Engraving (cracking), the success rate increases by 10%. The highest percentage you can reach is 75%, while the lowest is 25%.
While you might see this as a lot of stress, Ability Stones are totally worth the effort. Apart from granting you Engraving Points, they also buff your ability and serve as a good source of hit points during the endgame.
Accessories
Apart from increasing your stats, Accessories (Earrings, Rings, and Necklaces) can also add to Engraving Node Points. There are four types of Accessories: Rare, Epic and Legendary, and Relics. The Rare Accessories only give one node to a random Engraving; the Epic Accessories can add a maximum of one node to two Engravings, while the Legendary Accessories can add a maximum of 2 nodes to two General Engravings and a Penalty Engraving. The Relics can add three nodes to two General Engravings and a Penalty Engraving.
The source of the Accessory also determines the type of Engraving Node Points you gain from it. Accessories gotten from Chaos Dungeons only give Nodes to Combat Engravings, while those from Abyssal Dungeons add nodes to Class Engravings.
It is worthy to note that you cannot equip two of the same Accessory at once.
