Capturing and breeding all 13 beasts in Hogwarts Legacy is an optional yet important task. These animals fill up the Room of Requirement and provide essential resources (including lots of gold). Moreover, some of these must be captured to complete a main story quest, even if you are not interested in them.

The professor asks you to capture three specific beasts during The Elf, The Nab Sack, And The Loom quest. While the first two are pretty easy to catch, the Mooncalf proves to be the most troublesome for most players.

How to find a Mooncalf?

Capturing the Mooncalf is no different from any other beast in Hogwarts Legacy. However, finding even a single Mooncalf is a very complex task. These small animals only appear at night to dance under the full moon’s light. Moreover, their big eyes and natural colors blend completely with the environment.

All these factors contribute to making the Mooncalf almost invisible in the field.

The Mooncalf beasts only spawn in specific dens allocated for their species. You can find several dens from the paw icons on the world map.

Once you reach a den, make sure it is nighttime. However, if you reach during the day, you can always change the cycle by waiting from the world map.

The Mooncalf appears a few minutes after the night. So, wait for a few minutes, then use the Disillusionment spell to become invisible. Next, use the Revelio spell while navigating through the den to find a few Mooncalfs.

Here’s how to find and reach all four dens of the Mooncalf:

  1. Pitt Upon Ford:

The first Mooncalf den in Hogwarts Legacy is found in the northern corner of the world map. You can easily reach this place if you have already activated the Pitt Upon Ford Floo Flame. To reach the den, head south from the Flame, as shown in the picture:

  1. Spinners Cavern:

The second Mooncalf den is found near the Spinners Cavern, further south of the previous den. You can easily reach this place by traveling east on your Broom from the Upper Hogsfield region, as shown in the picture:

  1. South Hogwarts Region:

The third den won’t be unlocked until you progress to the story’s second half. However, you can still access it early on by exploring the areas around Hogwarts Castle. To reach this den, travel southeast from the Hogsmeade Village until you reach the Mooncalf Den Floo Flame in south Hogwarts. Next, continue south from the Flame to find the den, just a few clicks away, as shown in the picture:

South Hogwarts Region:
  1. Tomb of Treachery:

The last Mooncalf den is located near the southwestern corner of the world map. You can easily reach this area if you have played the first half of the main storyline. This den is located southeast of the Tomb of Treachery Floo Flame. To reach this place, you can also head northeast from the Marunweem Floo Flame, as shown n the picture:

Now that you have learned about all Mooncalf den locations, the next challenge is to locate one of the beasts in their den. As mentioned above, the Mooncalf only spawns during the night. So, it would be best to visit the den at night or wait in the den for the nighttime.

Next, use the Disillusionment charm to become invisible so the beast can’t spot your approach. Otherwise, it will run away and alert all other beasts. The Revelio charm will be of great help in highlighting all nearby animals.

Once you find a Mooncalf, your next objective is to stun its movements. For this purpose, you can either use the Wingardium Leviosa spell to elevate it into the air, or a combination of Glacius and Arresto Momentum spells that you learn from Madam Kogawa’s first two assignments.

Once the beast is stunned, you can bring up the Nab-Sack and wait for the 3 meters to fill up while aiming at the stunned Mooncalf. Once all three meters are filled, the beast will be captured, and now you can place it in your Loom in the Room of Requirement.

Conclusion:

The Mooncalf is perhaps the hardest beast to find in Hogwarts Legacy. This animal is extremely elusive and only appears during the nighttime. Furthermore, it is small, and its natural colors blend in with the environment, making it impossible to spot in the field.
