One of the most critical resources in Rimworld is components. From the beginning of the game to the very end, you will be using components to craft essential products for your base. The problem is components are relatively scarce on the rim. So, how do you get components in Rimworld?
We’ll be going over many different methods in this article. Some will require high levels of research, while others will be for low-tech tribes. That way, anyone trying to get components can do so regardless of whether they are in the early or late game.

How to get Components in Rimworld?
There are so many different ways to get components in Rimworld. Here is a quick list:
- Mining compact machinery
- Deconstructing ship chunks
- Using a fabrication bench
- Creating mining camps
- Using the long-range mineral scanner
The easiest and most straightforward way to get components in Rimworld is to mine them. Almost all of the basic Rimworld maps spawn with compacted machinery, which can be mined for two components each. However, mining yield (affected by pawns’ mining level) and the game difficulty can change this number.
Now, this is quite obvious, and most players will probably say, “ya, duh. This guide is stupid,” but stay with me here. I understand that you have likely already run out of nodes. Thankfully, there is an insanely easy way to alleviate your lack of nodes. Just move tiles.
If you go to the world map and form a caravan to travel to a tile (has to be two tiles away to work) and use the settle option, you can explore an entirely new map. This new tile will usually have LOADS of components to collect. Within 5-10 minutes, you can have 100 components with almost no work. Although, this depends on which tile you travel to. Don’t expect this to work on ocean tiles.
So, you can EASILY get components from simply mining. Explore all the tiles around you and form mining camps to never run out of components.
Trading for components
Trading for components is another option for anyone with a burgeoning economy but no components. You will need to know who to trade with and how to trade with them.
As for who, the only traders who sell components will be “bulk goods traders.” Others, like shamans, exotic goods, or slavers, will not sell any of the much-coveted resources. Exotic goods traders do, however, sell advanced components.
For the how of trading with other tribes, you will either have to wait for them to pass by your base (slow and not what you want), send a caravan to a settlement (also slow depending on distance), or use a comms console. The comms console will be the easiest, as you can request caravans in exchange for goodwill, but it still won’t be immediate.
How to get advanced components in Rimworld?
As mentioned above, an easy way to get advanced components is by trading for them, although this might be prohibitively expensive. You can alternatively use a fabrication bench to craft them with components, gold, plasteel, and steel.
Advanced components are incredibly hard to get. You’ll need to be reasonably secure in your tribe and a decent way through your playthrough before these become reliably attainable.
Can you get components from mechanoids?
No, you no longer get components or plasteel from shredding mechanoids. This was patched many updates ago to balance the economy. You will still get regular old steel from them, but no more higher-tier materials.
Conclusion
And those are the best ways to get components in Rimworld. Hopefully, this helps you build a glitter world empire. Good luck with your runs!
