Chests in Stardew Valley
Obtaining items and resources sure are important in Stardew Valley, and so are your storages. In-game, you have your backpacks as inventory but it won’t be enough for all the resources you’ll need. That’s where chests will come in handy.
Chest is a type of storage in Stardew Valley that you can craft using 50 pieces of wood. The good thing about making chests is that there is no limit to crafting one. Plus, it can accommodate 36 different types of items inside. Each slot can also be stacked with 999 pieces of identical items. Another good thing with your chests is that items do not expire or decompose once placed inside.
Each chest can also be personalized by changing its color. Once opened, a color bar appears above the inventory window. It has its default brown color, while you can still choose from other 20 different colors available in the color picker.
How to Move Chests in Stardew Valley?
Many players are still confused about how to move chests in Stardew Valley. They even think that it is impossible to move these from one place to another. On the contrary, there are several actually ways how you can move chests in Stardew Valley that you can try yourself.
These are some of the ways to move chests in Stardew Valley!
Moving an Empty Chest
This is the most basic, yet hassle way to move your chest. First, you’ll be needing a pickaxe, an axe, or a hoe – don’t worry, you’ll already have these tools from the start of the game. After picking a tool that you would want to choose, look for the chest you want to move and hit it until it breaks. Once it breaks, the woods used can be retrieved. Now, you’ll have to look for a new place to put your chest. And all you have to do is craft your chest again using the woods that you recollected after breaking the same chest.
Old players from the older version also used this method even with full chests. They used to empty their chests, destroy them, collect the woods, rebuild the chests, and one by one return the items inside. It was tedious work for players which caused complaints. That’s why the Stardew Valley ver. 1.5 made it easier for players to move their chests even when full.
Moving a Full Chest
Good thing that Stardew Valley version 1.5 and later added a new feature of the game. Moving full chests doesn’t require you to remove the items inside anymore. All you have to do is unequip any tool on your hands – you must be bare-handed in doing this, or else nothing will happen.
After removing any tool from your character’s hand, go near to the chest and face the direction you want to move it. Then, hit the chest ten times. Every ten hits done to the chest move it one tile towards the direction you want to place it.
In case something is blocking the way as you move the chest, it will either move left, right, or behind you.
Moving a Chest with Game Modification
Among the three, this could be the easiest way to move a chest in Stardew Valley. Playing on the PC version, you can get this mod called Carry Chest.
As implied in its name, this Carry Chest mod allows you to literally carry the chest on your head to easily transfer your chests anywhere you want it to. It doesn’t have to be an empty chest for you to carry it. All you have to do is pick up the chest, move it, and drop the chest in its new position.
But knowing that it is a modded version of the game, it is not guaranteed that your items and progress will be safe all the time. As the game updates, the modded game version becomes outdated and unstable which can cause some glitches, bugs, and even loss of your items. That is why using a modded version of a game requires caution, and must be used at your own risk.
Where Can I Place Chests in Stardew Valley?
Any items can actually be placed anywhere you like around the map – that clearly includes the chests. Chests are not limited to being placed inside the houses. In fact, you can place chests on your farm for an easier and more convenient way of storing items while foraging, fishing, and mining.
The only problem in placing a chest outside is when you accidentally or unconsciously positioned it on a villager’s path. Once a villager walks through any of your crafted items, it will be destroyed. It’s like a rule of thumb to never leave your chest on a villager’s path. The chest, together with the items inside, will be gone in an instant.
Despite that, there are still good reasons for you to build chests outside of your house. Aside from serving as additional inventory for your resource grinding, you can also use it to gift villagers. You can do this by placing chests near the villagers’ houses and storing the gifts inside.
