Baldur’s Gate 3 can be quite complicated at times. The game requires you to focus on your objectives and avoid getting lost in the magical world. Once such a situation presents itself when you start the Save Mayrina side quest. It is an early-game quest that appears when you move a little west of the main path in Druid Grove.
At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary side quest. However, your actions and decisions can make the difference between life and death for Mayrina. So, you should carefully choose all the right options if you want her to make it out alive. Also your decisions may also result in the death of Mayrina’s two brothers. Therefore, this article explains all the important steps about how to save Mayrina in BG3.

How to Save Mayrina in BG3?
Save Mayrina is an important side quest that can help you unlock a series of activities if you manage to actually save her life. However, you should grab all the important items, prepare for a dangerous battle, and know how to react to each choice.
Furthermore, even after you save her, you need to help her bring her dead husband back to life. Finally, you must choose between giving away the special Wand and keeping it for yourself, affecting your relationship with Mayrina.
All this may seem quite overwhelming but trust me, you get through just fine if you follow all these steps correctly:
Start the Save Mayrina Quest:
The first step is obviously to find Mayrina’s two brothers to start the side quest. You can find them right around the corner when you take a little off-road trip. Start in Druid Grove and go west until you find a stone bridge. Next, cross the bridge and head south to reach the Blighted Village. The next step is to go a little south from the Village to enter the Sunlit Wetlands.
After entering the Sunlit Wetlands, go down the sloppy plain until you find 2 men accusing a woman. These 2 men are Mayrina’s brothers who are accusing Auntie Ethel of abducting their sister Mayrina. So, your job is to intervene in the quarrel and hear what both sides have to say.
Next, you can either side with Ethel and fight off Mayrina’s brothers or you can side with the brothers and deal with Ethel. Nevertheless, you will get the Save Mayrina quest in your quest log.
Pursue Ethel:
After siding with Mayrina’s brothers, Ethel will briefly transform into her hog form and disappear. So, the next step is to find and interrogate Ethel. You can also convince Mayrina’s brothers to go after the Hog, but they will eventually die in the battle. So, you should save them and go after the witch yourself; they will die anyway.
Also, don’t forget to bring the Protection from Evil and Good spell, as it will come in handy later on. Before you proceed to Ethel’s Teahouse, you should speak with the talking sheep and the fog to know everything about Ethel and the place’s illusions. Finally, head to Auntie Ethel’s Gnarled Teahouse on the riverside to face Ethel and find Mayrina.
Speak with Ethel:
As you approach the teahouse, you will hear Ethel asking Mayrina to finish her pie as she is pregnant. Next comes another cutscene where you must choose between telling Mayrina about her brothers or speaking with Ethel.
At this point, your choice doesn’t really matter much, as Ethel will take away Mayrina at the end of the dialogue either way. Still, if you choose to tell Mayrina, Ethel will turn hostile and attack you along with her minions. However, she will run off with Mayrina when her HP drops below 50%.
Similarly, if you speak with Ethel, she offers to remove your parasite in exchange for a charmed eyeball. If you accept her offer, she will take out your eyeball and charm it, causing several side effects like a -1 perception point. Furthermore, she will fail to take away the parasite as it is protected by external forces.
Follow Ethel:
Regardless of your decision in the previous cutscene, Ethel will flee with Mayrina into the depths of her cave. So, you must quickly follow her by passing through the wall illusion behind the fireplace. As you enter through the wall, you will find a room with several corpses and some other stuff lying on the table.
You will need at least one mask from the table in the next room, so grab it but don’t put it on. Ethel can control the character who puts on the mask. So, if you put it on for too long, Ethel will cause a fight amongst your party members.
Moreover, you can also use the Speak with the Dead spell on these corpses to learn more about Ethel and her bewitched tricks.
The Gnarled Door:
As you progress through the basement area, you will find a Gnarled Door in your path. This door may seem inaccessible, but you can easily unlock it by two methods.
First, you can unlock the door by wearing the mask for a while, but you should quickly put it away after passing through the gate. Otherwise, Ethel will be able to control you and your party members during the boss fight. Fortunately, you can overcome this flaw by casting the Protection from Evil and Good spell.
Secondly, you can also use the Arcane check method to pass through the Gnarled Door. This door is actually an illusion, so you should angle the camera such that you can look to the other side of the door. Now, you and your teammates can easily pass through the door without using a mask. However, you should Sheathe your weapons to get a better camera angle.
Once you pass through the door, you will be ambushed by Ethel’s pawns wearing the Whispering Mask. Evidently, they are the people who wore the masks for too long without any spell protection, so now they are in her control.
After defeating the pawns, proceed further until you find a small waterfall in your way. Jump across the waterfall to find the entrance to the Overgrown Tunnel.
The Poisonous Tunnel:
The Overgrown Entrance leads to the Poisonous Tunnel. You will quickly lose your HP as soon as you step into the poisonous mist. Fortunately, you can tackle this situation in several ways:
- Wear the Whispering Mask and cast the Protection from Evil and Good spell on yourself. Next, quickly run through the mist and take off the mask as soon as you escape the tunnel.
- If you don’t want to use the mask, you can just use your Dash skill to quickly move through the tunnel. However, you will need to use Healing abilities several times.
- Alternatively, you can use Shadowheart’s fire spell to burn the poison and then cast the water spell to put it out. However, for this maneuver, you should have Shadowheart as your companion.
- Similarly, if your companion is Lae’ zel, you can use the Feather Fall Skill to activate her special jump and quickly get through the tunnel by taking minimum damage.
The Ancient Abode:
Finally, after passing through the Overgrown Tunnel, you will end up in the Ancient Abode. This is the final place where you will face Aunt Ethel in her true hag form. Furthermore, despite your previous encounter in the Teahouse, Ethel will have full HP.
As soon as you step into the arena, Ethel will throw a firebomb at Mayrina’s cage to set it ablaze. So, you must find a way to extinguish the fire, or else Mayrina will die before the end of the battle. So, you should find a way to destroy the yellow Orb with your Mage Hand. Alternatively, you can send one of your companions while you focus on Ethel.
Defeat Aunt Ethel to Save Mayrina:
After extinguishing the burning cage, the real encounter with Ethel will start. As soon as the battle begins, Ethel will clone herself. So, your job is to find the real one. Fortunately, you can easily identify her by attacking all of the clones. These clones don’t have any debuffs and will vanish after taking some damage.
Next, once you have identified the real boss, Ethel will take out Mayrina from the cage and cast another illusion spell. Now, Mayrina will appear as Ethel, but you can easily distinguish as she keeps saying that she’s not Ethel.
Finally, after reaching below 30% HP, Ethel will again clone herself for the last time. After you destroy all her clones, she will disappear. So, you should use an AoE skill or use your arrows to deal further damage.
After reaching 10% HP, Ethel will plea for a bargain. She offers you any power you like in exchange for letting her go. So, you can either choose to kill Ethel or take her offer.
- If you choose to kill Ethel, Mayrina will become angry as you ruined her deal with Ethel.
- Similarly, if you accept her offer, Ethel will give you Auntie Ethel’s Hair and flee with Mayrina.
Regardless of your decision, you have saved Mayrina’s life, marking the end of this encounter. However, there is one last step before completing the Save Mayrina side quest.
Saving Mayrina’s Husband:
After dealing with Ethel, you must search the Hog’s workshop thoroughly. You will find several valuable loot items along with the Bitter Divorce Wand. This Wand can bring back the dead, so it is crucial for helping Mayrina.
Once you are done looting the workshop, you can use the Mushroom Teleporter to find Mayrina for the second time. She will be standing with her dead husband’s coffin. Next, use the Bitter Divorce Wand to bring her husband back from the dead, but he will become a zombie.
- Now, you will have two choices, i.e., hand over the Wand to Mayrina. In this case, she will head to Baldur’s Gate in search of a cure for her undead husband.
- Similarly, you can also keep the Wand for yourself or destroy it once and for all. However, doing so will make Mayrina very angry with you.
In any case, your final decision will complete the Save Mayrina Side quest. The rewards you get for completing the quest mainly depend on the choices you make during the mission.
