Mining Guide: Pickaxes
In a nutshell, mining in New World is a gathering skill that enables you to perform the available mining activities such as mining of Ores, motes, gems, extraction of oil, etc. However, the prerequisite for attempting any sort of mining is having an equipped pickaxe. It Is the only tool you will need to commence with your mining profession.
Crafting a Pickaxe
Pickaxes come in all sorts of qualities. 5 tiers to be specific. Each tier pickaxe has its stats, durability, and speed. Below is a quick depiction of the five tiers of pickaxes.
Tier 1 | Flint Pickaxe | Level 0 | Mining Speed 100% | Gear score 100 |
Tier 2 | Iron Pickaxe | Level 5-19 | 125%-225% | 200-300 |
Tier 3 | Steel Pickaxe | Level 20-39 | 250%=350% | 300-400 |
Tier 4 | Starmetal Pickaxe | Level 40-59 | 400%-550% | 400-500 |
Tier 5 | Orichalcum Pickaxe | Level 60 | 625%-850% | 500-600 |
But now coming to the recipe itself. It may not come to you as a surprise that New World does not just gift you a pickaxe out of the blue— you have to work for it by scavenging the materials required for crafting one. Personal recommendation is to aim for an iron pickaxe as soon as you hit level 5 in the game. Once you have become eligible for the tier 2 pickaxe in terms of level, you can now move forward to crafting.
Here’s what you will need!
- A dozen iron ingots x12
- Leathers x2
- Refined wood x3
Iron pickaxe will enable you to mine ore veins and boulders.
Buying a Pickaxe
What if you do not want to craft a pickaxe—can we buy one and if so, then where to buy a pickaxe in New World? Keep calm and after having earned sufficient coin, head over to the closest trading post on the map. After all, trading posts’ role in New World is not for buying goods only, but to sell the stuff you no longer need as well. Here, you will find numerous pickaxes which were once crafted by earlier players and later sold. Since New World does not have any type of vendor nor merchants in Aeternum, (at least for now) trading posts are your best bet.
Here’s what you will need to do. Once you find yourself before a trading post, enter it and go into the tools section. From there to gathering tools, to pickaxe and then clicking on the top left square box that says, “can equip.” This is a filter option that will display all the pickaxes that are eligible for purchase. Here’s a visual of it.
Buy a pickaxe that suits your budget and then get ready for mining your heart out.
Mining Guide: Mining Faster, Carrying more and the Appropriate Allocation of Attribute Points
When your hero is out amid wilderness mining tirelessly to gather resources, saving few seconds on every ore can impressively aid in speedrunning your mining marathon. To make it happen, every New World player shouldn’t be oblivious to how one can boost their mining speed. The solution for making every strike of your pickaxe faster lies in the appropriate allocation of your attribute points.
New World has 5 attributes: strength, dexterity, intelligence, focus and constitution. Mining speed is directly proportional to gains in the Strength attribute. Below is a depiction of the mining bonuses you receive upon leveling your strength attribute.
STRENGTH ATTRIBUTE POINTS | MINING BONUSES |
At level 50 | +10% mining speed |
At level 100 | +20 encumbrance (Increases carrying capacity) |
At level 150 | -10% weight of mining items |
At level 200 | +10% mining speed |
At level 250 | +10% yield when mining |
At level 300 | 25% Chance to land an ore with one strike |
Not to mention, on top of mining speed you also gain greater yield, encumbrance, and reduction in the weight of mining items. To summarize, you cannot have a smooth mining experience by neglecting to invest in strength attributes.
Quick Tip
In case this knowledge came to you just now and you have already spent your attribute points someplace else, then worry not, because New World offers a free refund of all attribute points till level 20. Reset now and get cracking!

Crafting/Buying Bags
Above, we pointed out the essence of saving time during mining sprees by investing in the strength attribute. At the same time, it is equally important to expand on your existing carrying capacity. Why? To save yourself as many return trips as possible to sell the stuff which you can no longer carry. To be more specific, saving yourself time on return trips to trading posts. No one is a fan of postponing their ongoing tasks simply because they met a dead-end in the shape of insufficient carrying space. Without further ado, here’s what you need to know about Bags in New World.
The value of bags in New World goes undiminished. Whether you are a miner or a crafter, you will need an abundance of slots to fit your collections. For starters, the crafting of bags comes under the profession of armouring. Armouring is a profession in New World that allows players to craft body gear for protection. This includes bags since they come with armour stats. For these crucial reasons you should be picking up on armouring profession if you wish to expand on your existing carrying capacity. Having cleared this up, let us move on to the question of, “how to get bags in New World?”
Receiving Bags as Quest Rewards~
There are three ways of obtaining bags in New World.
Number 1 way is perhaps the most straightforward one— through the completion of quests. You receive your first bag around level 10-12 after completing a quest called, “Between Innkeepers.” However, it is only one bag and the next one doesn’t come anytime sooner. Therefore, to be a consistent miner, you need to cook up alternate ways of getting more bags. T
New World Bags and Rune of Holding
The recipe for crafting bags is incomplete without the highly valued, “Rune of Holding.” It is highly valued because it is not easy to come by. To achieve Runes of Holding, you need to fulfill a prerequisite—joining a faction to access that specific faction’s store. The rune + the remainder of the materials lead to a successful craft. Like pickaxes, Bags also come in tiers in New World.
