How to Install Risk of Rain 2 Mods

Please remember that the game is currently in early access and although mods are supported, there is a chance some mods can break the game. So far, I haven’t run into any problems but there is still a chance it can happen.

Alright so here is how to install mods in Risk of Rain 2.

How to Install Risk of Rain 2 Mods

A quick walkthrough on how to install RoR2 mods:

• Go to https://thunderstore.io/
• Download the R2API and the BepinExPack
• Unzip the BepinExPack files and put them inside your Risk of Rain 2 folder
• Unzip the R2API files and put them inside the BepinExPack plugins folder (delete the R2API plugin folder after you take the R2API folder out of it)
• Now, download whatever mod you want and unzip it
• Find the dll file and paste it into the R2API folder that is inside your Bepin folder
• Start Risk of Rain 2 (You should notice a terminal pop-up, this means it worked)

Now for the longer version.

First things first, you are going to have to go to Thunderstore.io. After arriving at the homepage, you are going to want to download the R2API and the BepinExPack.

Next, unzip the BepinExPack and put the folder called BepInEx in the Risk of Rain 2 folder that is inside your steamapps folder. Traditionally this will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Risk of Rain 2\ but it should be wherever you installed Risk of Rain 2 at.

Once you’ve done that, you need to unzip the R2API and put those files inside the BepinExPack plugins folder. So it will look like Risk of Rain 2\BepinsInEx\Plugins\ <— where you should put the R2API folder. Keep in mind you need to put the R2API folder in the plugins folder, which can be found inside the plugins folder of the unzipped files (confusing right? check the screenshots).

After you have all of that setup, you can finally download whatever mod you wish (continue reading for the best mods list). I personally chose ItemStats for this mod install guide, which shows you the stats of the items in-game rather than having to look them up or memorize them.

All you have to do to install the your favorite Risk of Rain 2 mod is to unzip the files, copy the dll file, and then paste it into the R2API folder.

And that’s it! Simply start Risk of Rain 2 normally and a terminal should appear if you did it all correctly.

Risk of Rain 2 Mods FAQ

Can I play with friends without mods?
Yes and no. There is a mod that allows you to host modded multiplayer games, but otherwise no. If this mod stops working or goes out of date then you are SOL.

Can I do quickplay or Prismatic Trials with mods?
Again, no. Obviously mods would change the game enough that you shouldn’t be matchmaking with other players who don’t have them.

Can you use mods on the PS4/Xbox/Etc?
No, you can’t use mods on console. This may change in the future, but currently you have no way of modding your console version of risk of rain 2.

Disclaimer

While this is exactly how to download mods manually, I highly recommend using the mod manager from thunderstore. It makes downloading only take a single click and handles a lot of the configuration and other technical stuff.
