How to Check Afflictions?
The game offers several ways to diagnose your health problems so that you can quickly treat them. Firstly, you can check for the most recent ailment by observing your handy watch compass located in the bottom left corner of the screen. Here, you will find different icons with variable colors. Once you identify the problem, you can move on to treat it accordingly.
Secondly, you can check for all acquired afflictions from the character menu. Simply open the pause screen and press Y on your controller or B on your keyboard to access the Status and Prognosis section of the menu. Alternatively, you can also access this menu by pressing the status icon in the bottom right corner of the pause screen.
Status Effects Prognosis:
Once you open the Prognosis screen, you will see a list of current status effects, their severity, and their respective icons. Furthermore, if there is a timer under the ailment, it means that the wound will heal over time without any remedy. Similarly, if there is nothing on the screen, it means that you are currently free from any ailment.
Lastly, if the mini-map has a different color, it means that you are currently exposed to some threat. You will be vulnerable to an affliction if you don’t wear suitable gear or leave the area. For example, if the map has turned orange, you are currently exposed to a temperature condition. If you stay there for long without any protection, you will acquire Blisters, Burns, or Frostbite.
How to Cure All Status Effects?
Now comes the tricky part of the whole status effects concept. All afflictions in Starfield are divided into 5 different categories. Moreover, the prescribed remedy for each ailment depends on the current condition. For instance, good and stable status effects will heal over time. On the other hand, poor and bad wounds require your immediate attention.
Fortunately, the status effects icons offer the required remedy for each type of wound. If you open the aid section of your inventory, you will find that each item has a set of icons in its description. So, you can use these colored icons to quickly cure all status effects. Here is a list of all aids and the ailments that you can cure with them:

You can loot them from corpses, get them from chests, and even craft some of them on the workbench in your outposts. Similarly, you can always purchase these items from different vendors if you can’t find them on your own.
However, if the vendor doesn’t have the required item, you can either wait for the vendor to restock or visit another nearby merchant. Lastly, if you don’t want to fill up the inventory with these heavy items, you can always store them in your ship.
Visit a doctor:
The fastest way to cure all status effects and afflictions is to visit the doctor. You will always find at least one doctor in every human settlement. Even though this method costs you a few coins, it saves you from the hassle of home remedies.
Basically, curing your status effects with a doctor is almost the same as clearing your bounty. First, you find the nearest doctor and pay him a visit. You can find the best doctors in Jemison or New Atlantis. Once you find the doctor, speak to him/her about your status effects. Finally, pay 500 credits to receive the treatment and remove all status effects in one go.
How to Avoid Status Effects?
You are bound to receive quite a few afflictions during your playthrough. The game will punish you for eating junk food, falling from heights, leaving wounds untreated, and even standing in the sun for too long. However, it doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything to prevent these status effects.
Certain gear and armor items offer protection against various types of afflictions. Though they won’t save you permanently, you can rely on them to quickly leave the area. You can check for special protections in each spacesuit’s description. Here is a list of different spacesuit buffs and their respective bolsters:
- Airborne: Protects you from toxic gasses emitting from fissures and vents.
- Corrosive: Offers protection from toxic sources like alien water, poisonous vents, and wastelands.
- Radiation: Bolsters you from sunlight radiation when exploring planets and moons with little to no atmosphere.
- Thermal: Protects you from extreme heat and cold environments.

While minor afflictions heal on their own, repeated and more serious ailments require your immediate attention. However, the game doesn’t disclose the optimum way to heal each wound.
