What are Universal Loves and Dislikes in Stardew Valley?
Stardew Valley is an exciting and complex game because of the dynamic characteristics of the villagers dwelling on this island. These characteristics make them a lot more realistic if compared to other real-life farming simulation games.
One of the most exemplary characteristics of the villagers that make up their identities is their personal preferences. The villagers in Stardew Valley also have their own loves, likes, and dislikes on things.
You might be wondering why these things are included in the game. It is because friendship and other relationships are also some of the important things that need to be covered in this game.
In order to build relationships with other villagers, you must get to know them and know what their loves and dislikes are. You can use this information in gifting them.
Gifting
Gifting is one of the activities you can do to increase the number of hearts or the friendship level in the context of the game’s mechanics.
However, you cannot just simply give any extra items you have left in you to any villagers. The reason behind this is that they have different personal preferences. Some villagers are picky, while some are just firm with what they want.
The gifts are categorized accordingly for each villager in town. Namely, these categories are love, like, neutral, dislike, and hate.
In gifting the villagers, you have to be familiar with these things, especially about the extremes.
Even though it was mentioned that the gift items are categorized accordingly for each villager, there are still common grounds for each. These are called Universal Love and Universal Dislike.
Universal Loved Gifts
When we say universal loved gifts, these are all the gifts that all villagers love as implied in its name. So, if you are planning to boost your friendship level with a particular villager, you must at least be familiar with the gift items categorized under the universal loved items.
Knowing this information can greatly help you decide what gift to give a villager if you still do not have any idea about his or her gift preferences. Plus, giving a villager a gift under the universal loves automatically grants you +80 relationship points.
To make it easier for you, here is a complete list of all the items under the universal loves.
- Golden Pumpkin
- Magic Rock Candy
- Pearl
- Prismatic Shard
- Rabbit’s Foot
Giving universal love as your last resort for gifts has only one downside: it would be easier to keep the item than give it. This is because the items that all the villagers love are difficult to find and obtain.
That being said, you have to be wise when it comes to giving out universal love items. These items come in such great quality that is why you always have to keep an extra with you.
Universal Dislikes
Moving on, universal dislikes are all the items that you would want to remember not to give other villagers. Unlike universal love, receiving universal dislike items will greatly affect your relationship in a negative way. Gifting a universal dislike will automatically deduct 20 friendship or relationship points.
Be familiar with these items to prevent getting frowned upon and scoffed at by other villagers. Having said that, here is a list of all the universal dislikes.
- All building materials: battery packs, clay, fiber, hardwood, stone, and wood

These are all the items that you need to stop giving to other villagers unless stated in their preferences that they like some from here. Because, of course, there is always an exception to the rule.
It really is quite numerous, but remember that you can always go back to this list to double-check and not compromise your friendships.
Ideal Gifting Opportunities
Maintaining the friendship points and friendship level is really important especially if this villager is your prospective wedding candidate. That being said, conversing, visiting, and giving gist every day is really important.
However, there are some dates that you have to take note of to make your gifts more eventful and meaningful.
If you are to give someone a gift, it is really highly appreciated if it is given on a normal day. But these two events will actually increase the relationship points accumulated once gifted.
These two events are the villager’s birthday and during the Winter Star Festival.
Gifting during Birthdays
Birthdays are one of the most special days a villager can have in the game. That is why giving them the gifts that they like on this day will greatly benefit your relationship.
To know the upcoming birthdays of the month, right-click the calendar and it will show a list of all the expected birthday celebrants of the month.
In fact, giving a villager one of the loved gifts on his or her birthday will grant you an additional 640 friendship points. This is already a good increase so never let this awesome opportunity slip away as it will only come once a year.
But make sure not to give the items he or she dislikes as you will just ruin the party and will receive -160 friendship points.
Gifting during the Winter Star Festival
The Winter Star Festival also known as the Feast of the Winter Star happens on the 25th day of winter.
As you already know, the objective of this festival is the secret gift-giving activity. That being said, this event will also give you a big increase in friendship or relationship points if you have given someone a gift. In an instant, 400 friendship points will automatically be added if a loved gift is received from you.
However, a disliked gift will reduce the points by 100.
