Just like how it is in real life, there are also some unexpected events that you can encounter while playing Stardew Valley – one of which is the earthquake. Unlike the actual earthquake, the Stardew Valley earthquake does not repeat after experiencing it for the first time. As a new player, this may be the first event that you may encounter in the game.
Although the Stardew Valley earthquake can also be a bit destructive, it is also a great advantage to your game progress. Once you experienced the earthquake in-game, it will open new areas from the map that you can’t explore prior to the earthquake scenario. These two locations are the spa and the railroad.
The Stardew Valley earthquake is one of the random events in Stardew Valley. You will experience this upon reaching the third summer of your first year in-game and will occur at night while your character is sleeping. You’ll know when an earthquake happens if a note appears when you wake up saying, There was an earthquake during the night.
Before we dig deeper into the earthquake and what it does, let me first explain all the random events that you can encounter in Stardew Valley.

Random Events in Stardew Valley
Aside from the earthquake, there are also some more events that happen overnight. These random events are categorized into two: farm events and personal events.
Farm Events
Each night of the game, a randomly selected event happens when the player is asleep. There is no chance that nothing will happen in one night unless it is the night before the wedding day. Having said that, here is a list of farm events that you will encounter in-game.
- Earthquake
- Bundle Completion
- The Crop Fairy
- The Witch
- Meteorite
- Strange capsule
- Stone Owl
Personal Events
If the game didn’t choose any of the farm events mentioned above, these personal events will happen if you’re player fell asleep.
- A Child is born or delivered
- Partner asking for a child
- A farm animal gave birth
- Wild animal attack
These are all the random events that you can experience in Stardew Valley every night. Do not be surprised if one of these happens – it is just a normal night in Stardew Valley.
Now that the random events are explained, let’s see what the new locations opened by the earthquake can offer and how to locate them.
The Railroad
The railroad will be one of the first newly unblocked areas for you as a player. This will be available for exploration after the earthquake. You can check it out by going to the northern part of the mountains.
This area is actually a good spot to collect loot like geodes, iron ores, coal, stone, and even leprechaun shoes. All these items will be dropped by the train that comes to the railroad. The train doesn’t arrive each day, but it comes to the town on random days between 9 am to 6 pm. If you are outdoors, you will be notified if the train is coming. A message will appear saying, A train is passing through Stardew Valley, with a whistling sound.
The loot that the train drops will stay for the whole day, so there’s no need for you to be there when the train is arriving. But keep in mind that you have to collect the items before the day ends or all the loot will disappear.
Another important reminder in getting close to the railroad is to not stand near or in front of the train. This is obvious, but some players are still risking due to their curiosity that’s why I am here telling you that standing in from a train can cause your player to be stuck between the rails, receive damage, and pass out.
The Spa
Who would have thought that Stardew Valley also has places where you can spend your tie relaxing? The spa is the other place unlocked by the earthquake. Since you already know how to go to the railroad, it will be easy for you to find out the way to the spa.
The spa is located in the southwest area of the railroad. From the outside, it looks like a cozy building with signage that says bath.
Inside, there are two changing rooms that you can see – one for women and one for men. After walking straight and passing by the locker room, you will notice that your player will change their clothes into cute swimsuits.
You might think that the spa is just all about the views and relaxation but in fact, staying in the pool quickly regenerates your health and energy. This is actually a good move to save your crops instead of eating them to restore health and energy.
Will the Earthquake Affect My Farm?
As mentioned earlier, the Stardew Valley earthquake can be a bit destructive just like the real quake outside the game. But inside the game, you won’t have to worry about building damages that the earthquake can inflict. Your buildings will be perfectly fine after the earthquake, as well as all your crops so there’s no need to worry and rush to check everything when you wake up.
