Now, coming to the mining process. The Oil Shale is actually found in the stone layer which is 20 blocks down from the surface of the desert. You have to dig down with a Pickaxe. And then once you are in the stone layer you can start gathering Oil Shale.
Each of these Oil Deposits grants you 100 units of Oil Shale when you completely mine them. Make sure you have free slots in your inventory before heading out to collect the Oil Shale.
