A Train Passing through Stardew Explained

What Is the “Train Passing in Stardew Valley”?

Stardew Valley is such an event-packed game, perhaps one of the reasons why players love the game. There is always something to look forward to and sometimes, they can even be unpredictable so you really have to watch out for sudden announcements and check your inboxes often.

One of the most random events in Stardew Valley is the arrival of a particular train. This is indicated by a text popping up saying “A train is passing through Stardew Valley” accompanied by a whistling sound coming from the train’s engine. Once this happens, this means the Train Passing in Stardew Valley Though event has commenced.

If the event occurred, you may want to visit the railroad since it might drop items that could be valuable. If nothing else, the train passing in Stardew Valley is still such a sight, just make sure to move out of the rail tracks since you can take damage and be knocked back if you make contact with the moving train, worse, your health could deplete to zero.

Where is the Railroad in Stardew Valley?

Railroad Passing in Stardew Valley

The train passing event only triggers if the player is outside. So, if you happen to be near the railroad, paying a visit won’t hurt. But, first things first: where is the railroad located in Pelican Town?

The railroad is located in the exterior region of the north of The Mountain. Particularly, if you happen to know where the Spa is, you would have no trouble finding the train then. From the Spa, go northeast, and voila! You will find the train carts and the train platform.

Accessing the Railroad

Aside from being outside, there’s another prerequisite for triggering the Train Passing Through event–access to the railroad. Primarily, the passage through the railroad is blocked by a boulder. But, you don’t have to worry if you can’t move it yourself; nature will do it for you.

On the 3rd day of Summer during the first year, an earthquake would take place. It is a little terrifying, yes, but the good news is that, due to the tremors from that event, the rock hindering the passage will move, making the railroad accessible at last.

Train Schedule

As addressed earlier, the Train Passing in Stardew Valley Through is such a random event. This is due to the fact that once the railroad is accessible, the train might come on any random day without any warning. It might arrive between 9 am and 6 pm, regardless if the game is paused.

Once the train entered the town, it will not be paused even if a Railroad cutscene is displayed. For instance, during the wizard’s Dark Talisman’s quest where the rail track is showing, the train will still pass however invisible in the background. Nonetheless, you would still see the smoke and hear the sound emitted from the train.

The unpredictability of this event could be a little frustrating. So, to get rid of that edging anticipation for the train, some persistent players listed approximate days when the train might pass the Pelican Town. Again, this is a disclaimer that these days are not accurate but it won’t hurt trying to wait for the train around these days and times.

Some players claimed that the train comes 9 times to the town but, here are the 8 approximate dates gathered through the invaluable effort of  dedicated Stardew Valley players:

  • Year 1, Summer 8 at 1 pm
  • Year 1, fall 13 at 9 am
  • Year 1, Winter 2 at 5 pm
  • Year 2, Spring 16 at 1:30 pm
  • Year 2, Summer 5 at 1:30 pm
  • Year 2, Summer 28 at 11 am
  • Year 2, Fall 2 at 4:30 pm
  • Year 2, Fall 21 at 12:50 pm
  • Fall 23 at 3 pm

Items Dropped by the Train

Items Dropped by Train

The train leaves some treats upon its appearance in town; basically, the reason why you should be wary of when the train will come. If you happen to reach the railroad exactly when the train is passing, you could actually follow the end of the train to collect the drops.

While at it, the train drops are actually a not-so-wide range of items. As the train passes, items like Leprechaun Shoes, Stone, Coal, Iron Ore, Wood, and Geodes may fall off the train.

You do not have to be so sad if you happen to miss the actual train passing the town because the items dropped won’t disappear with the train. But, make sure that you collect them before the day ends because as the day ends, they will disappear. We could assume that the villagers decluttered the littering items around the rail tracks.

Train Types

Train Types Passing in Stardew Valley

While the schedule for the train’s arrival is unannounced, it is also uncertain if the train that would pass the Pelican Town would drop items. There are different trains that might come and some of them might not carry resources.

There are five types of trains that can pass by in Stardew Valley. One of them is a dark gray train that appears with Joja logos on the side of the cars. There is also a passenger train with only passengers; most probably, this train is one of those that can’t drop resources.

Another train is a normal one in terms of appearance but is twice as faster as the other trains. A blue train with barred windows that also moves twice the speed of other trains might come. Lastly, the one that only comes during winter is the red train which cars are full of gifts and only gifts.
