For your first Cookie Clicker ascension, aim for 365 prestige levels on the Legacy meter. That earns 365 Heavenly Chips, enough for the opening upgrade package below. This recommendation is for a normal browser or Steam run with some active Golden Cookie play.
Already close to 440? You can wait and buy two extra upgrades. It is an optional larger budget, not a requirement or a universally faster route. Ascending at 1, 50, or 200 leaves you short of the full 365-chip package.

When Should I Ascend in Cookie Clicker?
Use the upgrades you can afford as your stopping point. The current community ascension route starts at 365. You do not need to stop a productive combo just to land on that exact number. If you overshoot, spend the additional chips on useful upgrades and keep progressing.

365 vs. 440 Heavenly Chips
The difference is 75 chips: Tin of Butter Cookies costs 25 and Starter Kit costs 50. Starter Kit gives you 10 cursors when you reincarnate; the tin unlocks additional cookie upgrades to buy during the run. Neither is another permanent upgrade slot. For a first run, 365 gets the core package sooner. Choose 440 if the extra wait is small and you want those additions immediately.

For the 440 route, add Tin of Butter Cookies (25) and then Starter Kit (50). Keep the 365 package intact; the smaller 90-chip list from older versions of this article was only a partial shopping list.
Permanent Upgrade Slot Strategy
Put your most expensive available kitten upgrade in Permanent Upgrade Slot I for your first ascension. It brings that milk-based production boost forward to the start of your next run. Select the upgrade in the slot before reincarnating.
The slot makes an eligible normal upgrade active from the start; it does not double its effect. Later choices depend on your playstyle and unlocked upgrades. Golden Cookie upgrades can become useful choices for active runs, but they are not a blanket replacement for the first kitten recommendation. See the permanent upgrade slots guide for later stages.
What is Ascension in Cookie Clicker?
Ascension resets your current bakery in exchange for permanent progression. You earn prestige levels and an equal number of Heavenly Chips when you gain new prestige. Chips are the currency for heavenly upgrades; prestige is the level used for your production bonus. Spending the chips does not spend your prestige levels.
How Many Cookies for Each Ascension?
Prestige follows a cubic curve: total prestige level³ × 1 trillion cookies baked all time. The first level needs 1 trillion cookies. A first ascension at 365 needs 48.627125 quintillion; 440 needs 85.184 quintillion. These are lifetime baked totals, not the cookies currently in your bank. See the wiki’s ascension mechanics.
After your first reset, distinguish your total prestige from the new levels you will earn on this ascension. Follow the Legacy display and your available chip budget rather than treating the lifetime total as newly spendable chips.
Should I Ascend Immediately in Cookie Clicker?
For the progression route in this article, no. Wait for the 365-chip package. If you already ascended early, your save is still usable: continue earning prestige and buy the missing upgrades. You do not need to wipe your save or restart from scratch.

Should I Sell My Buildings Before Ascending Cookie Clicker
Selling buildings does not directly increase cookies baked all time, so selling everything is unnecessary for an ordinary first ascension. There is a later-game exception: if you have unlocked but not bought Chocolate egg, increasing your bank before buying it can increase its payout. Recheck your prestige afterward, especially if you are targeting a Lucky upgrade.
Does the Stock Market Work With Ascension?
Stock sales do not directly add to cookies baked all time and therefore do not directly award prestige. They can still fund purchases in your current run. This behavior is recorded in the game’s version history.
Does Popping Wrinklers Work With Ascension?

Do I Keep Sugar Lumps When Ascending?
Yes. Sugar lumps persist through ascension, as do the building levels you bought with them. You do not need to spend them before resetting. Born Again challenge mode temporarily disables relevant progression effects, so use normal reincarnation for this guide.
Lucky Digit Ascension
For current browser/Steam rules, check your total prestige after ascending. Lucky Digit needs at least one 7 in that number, Lucky Number needs at least two, and Lucky Payout needs at least four. They do not have to be consecutive or at the end. You also need the prerequisite upgrades and enough unspent chips. The older ending-in-7/77/777 advice was incorrect. Check the upgrade requirements before committing to a later reset.
What to Do Before Ascending
- Export a backup save through Options.
- Finish any run-specific objective you care about before resetting.
- Pop wrinklers and collect any planned end-of-run payouts.
- Harvest any Garden plants you want to collect before the plot resets.
- Recheck your prestige and the upgrade budget, especially for Lucky upgrades.
- Ascend, buy your planned heavenly upgrades, fill your permanent slot, and reincarnate normally.
Second Ascension and Beyond
Plan the next purchase package before resetting again. The linked community route targets 2,550 total prestige for its second ascension. If you followed its 365 start, that is 2,185 additional levels; after a 440 start, the difference is 2,110. Adjust for upgrades you already own and chips you saved. Later stages should follow your actual unlocks and playstyle.
Once your bakery is running again, choose a Krumblor aura that fits your strategy. Keep your next upgrade package in mind rather than resetting whenever the Legacy number increases.
