Dung Eater Questline in Elden Ring

FromSoftware.inc follows a tradition of variable endings in all soul-like games. For instance, there are six different endings in Elden Ring that you can unlock by completing various questlines. Among them, the Blessing of Despair is the most reviled ending in the game. Still, if you are ready to explore all the different endings of the game, I suggest that you put the Loathsome Dung Eater questline in Elden Ring at the top of your list.

The questline is simple yet very lengthy but very rewarding in the end. After completing the questline, you receive the following items:

Where to find Loathsome Dung Eater?

Dung Eater Questline

Loathsome Dung Eater is mentioned in the introductory cutscene of Elden Ring. He is a fellow Tarnished that occupies a room in the Roundtable hold. It means that you can only access his questline after defeating the first few main bosses in the game. To start the Dung Eater questline, you must first speak to him at the Roundtable hold.

Head to the Royal Capital of Lyndell, and then return to the Roundtable hold. You will find that the door beyond Gideon’s study is now open. Moreover, you can also talk to Roderika near the blacksmith, who will tell that she can hear the wailing of spirits. Enter the room beyond study to find Loathsome Dung Eater. However, he won’t speak unless you give him 1x Seedbed Curse.

Where to find the first two Seedbed Curses?

Dung Eater Questline in Elden Ring - Royal Capital

There are a total of six Seedbed Curses in the game. However, you only need five of them to complete the Dung Eater Questline in Elden Ring. The nearest Seedbed Curse is just outside the Royal Capital. However, you must first complete the Blackguard’s quest to unlock the moat area. After completing his quest, the Blackguard will reward you with one Seedbed Curse.

Similarly, you can also find a non-quest Seedbed Curse in the East Capital Rampart in the Royal Capital. Start at the site of Grace in East Capital Rampart and head outside the doorway. Turn left and continue along the wall’s main path till you reach the broken statue gargoyle foe. However, the statue is blocking the door, so you must head inside using an alternate route.

Jump down from the balcony on the right and go inside the door. Head down using the elevator on the right side of the room and walk straight till you reach a big hall. Climb up the ladder on the right side of the hall and use the stairs to reach the roof. There you will find a corpse tied to a chair. Search the dead body to get your first or second Seedbed Curse.

Free Loathsome Dung Eater’s Body

Loathsome Dung Eater

After acquiring the first Seedbed Curse, report back to the Loathsome Dung Eater in the Roundtable hold. Giving him the item unlocks a dialogue where he gives you Sewer-Gaol Key and asks to free his physical body. To reach the jail, head to the Lower Capital Church near the wings of the dragon. You will find a well near the church; drop down the well to find a cell right next to the ladder. Open the cell door and climb down using the ladder.

Head right from the ladder to enter a rat-infested room. You must kill all the rats to progress on the path. After clearing the area, walk through the door in the southeast and take the ladder to climb down. Next, go towards the site of Grace in the Underground Roadside. Go towards the left corner of the hall till you see a hole in the floor.

Drop down from the hole and continue straight without entering any of the sub-tunnels. There is a ladder at the end of the main tunnel; climb it to find the Dung Eater’s jail on the right. Use the Sewer-Gaol Key to unlock his cellar and ask him to leave his Gaol.

Defeat the Loathsome Dung Eater in the outer moat

Defeat the Loathsome Dung Eater

After freeing the Dung Eater’s body, head back to his room at the Roundtable hold. You will find that the Dung Eater has disappeared, leaving behind a message on the floor that says, “I’ll defile you next. Come to the outer moat.” To reach the outer moat, start at the site of Grace in Capital Rampart. Head northwest from the site to reach a small body of water, the outer moat. However, you must wait for some time before being attacked by the Dung Eater. Moreover, if you haven’t already received the Seedbed Curse from Blackguard Big Boggart, now would be the best time.

After exhausting Boggart’s dialogue twice, the Dung Eater will invade your world. Fight and defeat the Dung Eater in any way you like, as he is a relatively weak boss. After defeating the Dung Eater, search his body to receive the Sword of Milos. Return to the Dung Eater’s room at the Roundtable hold to find that he has returned. Speaking to him triggers the next quest, where he asks for more Seedbed Curses.

Where to find all the Seedbed Curses in Elden Ring?

Seedbed Curses

As mentioned earlier, there are a total of six Seedbed Curses in Elden Ring. By now, you must have acquired two of them from the Royal Capital and given one to the Dung Eater already. So, now you must find three more Seedbed Curses from any of these locations to complete the Dung Eater questline.

  • Roundtable hold, Leyndell Royal Capital: The third Seedbed Curse is inside the Roundtable hold. Follow the tree where the branches meet the building. Climb up the sand and jump inside the building of Fortified Manor. There you will find yet another corpse tied to a chair; search him to get your third Seedbed Curse.
  • Volcano Manor: The fourth Seedbed Curse is near the site of Grace in the Temple of Eiglay. Firstly, you must go up the stairs near the Temple of Eiglay, blocked by a Fog Wall. However, it requires one Stonesword key to access the stairs. After heading up the stairs, carefully jump down the hanging cages to reach a corpse tied to the chair, and search him for your Seedbed Curse.
  • Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree: The fifth and sixth Seedbed Curses are in the Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.
    • The fifth Seedbed Curse is in Miquella’s Haligtree. Head northeast from the Prayer Room, exit the door, and go downwards using the staircases. Beware, two guards with crossbows will be above you when you reach the last staircase. Jump over the railing and go down to the large platform. Jump on the next brace on the northwest side of the platform. Next, get on the ledge and walk along it to reach a corpse on a chair. Moreover, you must also remain careful of the Putrid Avatar defending the doorway.
    • For the final Seedbed Curse, you must go back to the Prayer Room in Miquella’s Haligtree. Head northeast of the Prayer Room and go down the seven staircases. Continue running straight till you reach a large hall with a Cleanrot Knight inside. Don’t go inside the hall; jump over the railing and onto the brace. Drop on the ledge below and head down using the stairs into the dark to find the final tied-up corpse on a chair. Search the corpse to find your final Seedbed Curse.

The final sequence

Take the five Seedbed Curses back to the Dunge Eater in Roundtable hold. Interact with him to defile his flesh using the Seedbed Curses one by one till he’s had enough. After receiving enough of them, the Loathsome Dung Eater will reward you with the Mending Rune of the Fell Curse. You need this item to unlock the Blessing of Despair ending in Elden Ring.

Moreover, I strongly recommend that you revisit the sewer-Gaol cellar after completing the Dung Eater questline. Search the cellar to find the Omen armor set that includes Helm, Gauntlets, Greaves, and Armor.

How to summon Loathsome Dung Eater ashes?

summon Loathsome Dung Eater

You can summon Loathsome Dung Eater to aid you during battles using the Dung Eater Puppet Ashes. However, you must choose between the Blessing of Despair ending and the Dung Eater Puppet Ashes. If you aren’t interested in the alternate ending, you can acquire the ashes by following this guide.

Start Ranni the Witch’s quest and speak with spirit versions of Blaidd, Seluvis, and Iji before speaking to Ranni again. Don’t progress the Ranni quest any further; instead, visit Seluvis in his residence at the tower. When you speak with him, Seluvis will ask you to ensure that Nepheli drinks Seluvis’s Potion. Don’t visit Nepheli; instead, hold on to the potion till you visit Dung Eater’s physical body in the jail.

Speak to the Dung Eater and select administer Seluvis’s Potion in the dialogue. Next, visit the ruins near Ranni’s rise, and hit the illusionary wall to find the Dung Eater’s body in the lab. Now visit Seluvis’s rise, exhaust his dialogue, and follow his guidelines to purchase Dung Eater puppet ashes for 5 Starlight shards.
