Fish Pond Guide Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley, as a real-life farming simulation game, offers a bunch of different activities that you can do as well aide from basic farming. In order to expand and grow your farm inside Pelican Town, you have to try and explore these activities. Not only because of the fun, but it is also necessary in order to gather important resources and items.

One of the activities that you can try and enjoy is fishing. You can do this by having your first fishing lure and going out to lakes and oceans. However, traveling might be tiresome for others which stops them from going to and fro.

But in fact, there is a way to make things easier for these players. None other than having fish ponds on your farm. This way, you can just go out and catch a particular fish one time and transfer it into your pond. Doing this will make it easier for you as they will start reproducing on their own.

In this guide, we will share with you everything that you need to know about fish ponds.

How to Build a Fish Pond in Stardew Valley

Building Fish Pond

Before you enjoy the benefits of the fish products on your farm, the first thing you have to know is how to build your own fish pond which is actually quite simple.

For you to have a fish pond on your farm, go to Robin’s Carpenter’s Shop. Talk to her and choose to build the Fish Pond. You can buy it for 5000 gold. However, you must also need to collect 200x stone, 5x seaweed, and 5 green algae.

Once you have completed all the needed materials, you will be able to choose a 5×5 spot on your farm to place the pond. Just like any other building, this will take two days to be fully constructed.

Reproducing Fish in the Pond

Reproducing Fish in Ponds

Raising fish in your pond is actually easy. As mentioned, all you have to do is go fishing for one time. Once you already have a fish that you want, you can go back to your farm and transfer it to the pond. When one fish is already placed inside the pond, it will start reproducing another fish of the same kind until it reaches the current maximum capacity of the pond.

Fish Pond Quests

Fish Pond Quests

Initially, a fish pond can only hold a maximum of three fish of the same kind. For some fish types, fish ponds can only accommodate one fish at the start. To be able to expand its capacity, these fishes will ask you to provide a particular item. This is called the Fish Pond Quests

Once all the FIsh Pond Quests are complete, it can already hold a maximum of 10 fish of the same kind.

Advantages of Fish Ponds

After all that, it’s important to learn what benefits you can get from all these quests to increase the population capacity of your ponds. As long as you have ponds that are inhabited by different types of fish for each, you will be blessed with different supplies without breaking at sweating.

One tip that you would want to consider is to build several fish ponds on your farm. That way, you will be able to accommodate different types of fish on your farm since only fish of the same kind can only live on a similar pond.

With that being said, here are some of the benefits that you can receive by having several fish ponds with different fish types.

Unlimited Fish-produce Supply

Squid Ink Drop

Fish on your ponds will be grateful enough to you for taking care of them by giving you different produce items with roe being the most popular.

As you can see on each pond, there is a chum bucket in one corner. This is where the fish will place the item that they will give you. However, the chances and the rarity of the item given will depend on the number of fish inside that particular pond. Also, different fish types can give different items for you to harvest.

Although it is stated that the most common item to harvest is roe, there are two types of fish that do not produce roe. These two are Squid and Midnight Squid. In place of roe, they regularly produce squid ink instead.

Unlimited Fish Supply

Maki Roll from FIsh

Your fish ponds will serve as an alternative to the lake, river, and ocean that will take you some time to walk to. That means that you can also catch some fish in your pond. Don’t worry about decreasing the number of fish as they can still reproduce and replace the former one.

Catching fish from your pond means that you can make use of it to make Maki Rolls, Sashimi,  and Quality Fertilizer. Plus, you can also give it as a gift or use it when needed in a quest.

However, you have to be careful in catching all the fish from one pond. You have to make sure to leave at least one fish in order to continue reproducing. Otherwise, you will have to catch the same type of fish again as you can only place the same kind of fish inside the pond even though it is emptied.

Best Fish to Grow in Ponds

Fish ponds are one of the best passive sources of fish produce that you can have in Stardew Valley. This means choosing the right and best type of fish is important for you to have a chance of getting the fish produce you need.

But one thing you need to know is that not all fish want to be placed in fish ponds such as the Legendary fishes, Ms. Angler, Glacierfish Jr., Son of Crimsonfish, Radioactive Carp, Legend II, Clam, Green Algae, White Algae, and Seaweed.

In this section, you will see the three best fish types to place on your farm.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon Fish

One of the most popular fish in fish ponds is Sturgeon. You can find Sturgeon in Mountain Lake from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM during the Summer and Winter seasons.

The only item it produces is roe. However, Sturgeon is the only fish that produces the roe that can be made into caviar. Caviar is required for you to complete the Missing Bundle so make sure to fill at least one fish pond with Sturgeons.

Blobfish

Blobfish

Although it looks weird and a little odd, Blobfish is still one of the bests. Given its relevance, catching this is a little hard as you can only find this inside the Submarine during the Night Market.

Having this in one of your fish ponds can actually benefit you in terms of profit and your relationships with other villagers. If you wonder why, it is because it produces pearl which is universally loved by almost everyone. Plus, the roe it gives can also be sold at a pretty decent price. Aside from pearl and roe, there is also a chance that it will give you a Warp Totem: Farm.

Lava Eel

Despite its weird appearance, Lava Eel is also one of the fishes that you can place in your pond. And yes, it is also considered a fish.

You can find Lava Eel in the 100th level of the Mines and in Volcano Caldera at any season and any time of the day. Despite this, Lava Eel is a little difficult to catch. But successfully getting one will be definitely worth it.

The items it can give you are Roe, Gold Ore, Magma Geode, and Spicy Eel. But if you have the correct profession, say, Artisan Profession, you can sell its Aged Roe for 1,064 gold.
