How to Build a Coop in Stardew Valley

The coop is one of the farm buildings that you can purchase from Robin’s Carpenter’s Shop. Just like in real life, a coop in Stardew Valley is also used to shelter your livestock, making it one of the essential buildings on your farm especially if you want to specialize in growing and taking care of farm animals.

Stardew Valley’s coops can be upgraded, which is an advantage. Plus, every upgrade comes with special attributes.

In this brief guide, you will learn everything you need to know about the coop in Stardew Valley, especially how to build a coop.

What Animals Can Live Inside My Coop

What Animals Can Live Inside My Coop

One coop in Stardew Valley can shelter different kinds of animals. This includes a normal chicken, duck, void chicken, golden chicken, rabbit, and even dinosaur. The number of animals that can live inside this also varies depending on your coop level.

In order to have these animals on your farm, there are a number of things you must do first.

Chicken

Having a common chicken on your farm only requires you to build your first coop. After this, you can purchase a chicken from Marnie for 800 gold.

Duck

In terms of obtaining a duck, you must first have your coop upgraded for the first time. Ducks can also be purchased from Marnie for 1,200 gold.

Void Chicken

The void chicken also requires your coop to be upgraded at least once. You can obtain a void egg from random events, or by buying it from Krobus. Once you obtain a void egg, incubate it in the coop.

Golden Chicken

Achieving 100% perfection is the only way for you to obtain a golden egg. Once you reach perfection, you can now buy a golden egg from Marnie for 100,000 gold. Other than that, you can also buy it from Qi for 100 Qi gems, or obtain it by completing a random event with the Witch. Upon having a golden egg, incubate it in the coop.

Rabbit

To have a rabbit on your farm, you must fully upgrade your coop first. Once you completely upgraded your coop, you can go to Marnie and buy it for 8,000 gold.

Dinosaur

A dinosaur only requires you to upgrade your coop at least once. You can obtain a dinosaur egg by digging up Artifact Spots, fishing a treasure chest, killing a Pepper Rex, foraging in the Skull Cavern, or winning in the Movie Theater.

Farm buildings, including the coop, can be purchased from Robin in her Carpenter’s Shop. Before you can purchase a farm building, you must first collect the needed materials. For a regular coop, here are the needed crafting ingredients:

  • 4,000 gold
  • 300 wood
  • 100 stone

Building your first coop takes 3 Stardew Valley days in order to be completely done. However, upgrading your coop only takes 2 Stardew Valley days.

Coop Upgrades

Coop Upgrades

You can upgrade your coop a maximum of two times. The name of your coop changes according to its level – coop, big coop, and deluxe coop.

As you upgrade your farm coop, certain attributes and features are also added. Included here are the capacity, types of animals it can accommodate, and features of the coop itself. Even if your coop keeps on upgrading, its footprint remains 6 by 6 regardless.

Coop

As mentioned above, building a coop requires 300 wood, 100 stone, and 4,000 gold for the building cost. Since this is the basic coop that you can build, it can only accommodate four chickens inside.

Despite being the basic coop, it also has its own hay hopper and feeding bench inside.

Big Coop

To upgrade your coop into a big coop, go to Robin in her Carpenter’s Shop and do the same thing you did in purchasing the first coop. Scroll until you see the big coop option, and select the coop you want to upgrade.

For this, you will need 400 wood, 150 stone, and 10,000 gold for the building cost. Upon upgrading your coop into a big coop, it can now hold up to eight animals inside. The variety of the animals you can keep inside also increases. Along with the chicken, you can also shelter other animals such as ducks, void chickens, golden chickens, and dinosaurs.

The additional feature in this upgrade is the incubator.

Deluxe Coop

The same thing with the big coop, you can also upgrade it into a deluxe coop by talking to Robin in her shop. Scroll until you find the deluxe coop and pick which coop you want to upgrade.

The crafting ingredients for a deluxe coop are 500 wood, 200 stone, and 20,000 gold. Although it may seem expensive, it has several great features. With this upgrade, 12 animals can live together in one deluxe coop. The animals that can live inside a deluxe coop are chicken, duck, void chicken, dinosaur, golden chicken, and rabbit.

What’s even more exciting about upgrading your coop into a deluxe one is that it has an auto-feed system. This means, that as long as you have a stock of hay in your silo, your animals will automatically eat what’s on their feeding bench. But of course, you can still let your animals out to graze grasses. This feature is specially made for rainy days and the winter season.
