How to Build a Silo in Stardew Valley

Establishing your farm in Stardew Valley requires a bunch of infrastructures that can help you support the livestock. One of the most essential buildings that you must craft is the silo. Some players don’t realize the importance of silos during the early game. But I must tell you that even in early Stardew Valley games, you must already consider buying and crafting a silo in Stardew Valley for your farm.

In this brief guide, we will tell you the short and long-term use of silos in Stardew Valley for your farm and how to build a silo in Stardew Valley.

Use of Silo on my Farm

The silo in Stardew Valley is described as a farm building that allows you to cut and store grass for feed. Basically, the job of a silo is storage. Once you cut grass on your farm, you can put it inside the silo and then use it afterward. You can also store it for a longer time, especially during winter or rainy days.

As you continue cutting and storing hay inside the silo, you must also save money for another silo. Remember that a single silo can only store up to 240 hay.

Why Should I Build a Silo

If you are the type of farmer who wants to focus more on raising livestock and other barn animals, a silo in Stardew Valley will be your secret weapon. Especially if you consider choosing the rancher and coop master. As your farming skill upgrade, you must also think of building a silo or two. In fact, the silo is a great building to buy first – consider it as an early farm investment.

Keep in mind that your farm animals won’t go outside of their shelter to graze the grass during winter and rainy days. This is the main reason why you should prioritize building a silo. Especially if you are planning to take care of animals. Because cutting the grass when you have a silo grants you a 50% chance of collecting hay. Those hays are what your farm animals eat, so it’s better to always have a backup supply of their hay.

Once you fail to feed your farm animals during these times, you won’t have to worry about them dying. Instead, they will become upset and will stop the production of their respective animal products. It will immediately return once you feed them hay, but feeding them constantly is still recommended since it will affect your friendship with them.

The first thing you must do in order to use a silo is to cut as much grass as possible until the end of fall. In doing this, you can easily fill your silos and not worry about what your animals will eat once winter comes. Aside from this, cutting wheat also gives you a 40% chance of getting hay as well. From time to time, Marnie will also send you 30 hay in the mail.

All the collected hay from all cutting will automatically be deposited to your available silo. However, if you collected hay as a gift, you need to right-click on the silo while holding the hay in order to move it to your silo stash.

Now, in order to access the silo from your silo, you have to locate first your hay hopper. Hay hoppers are placed in a barn or a coop. These hay hoppers are used to easily transfer hay from the silo to your inventory. By simply clicking on the hay hopper, you can easily access all the hay from your silo.

Silos can be purchased by going to Robin’s Carpenter’s Shop. Once you arrived at the Carpenter’s Shop, talk to Robin and select the option to buy farm buildings. After that, you can see all the farm buildings and you have to look for the silo. But keep in mind that before you purchase a silo for Robin, you must first have the following crafting materials:

  • 100 gold
  • 100 stone
  • 10 clay
  • 5 copper bars

Once purchased, the next part will be the construction. A single silo takes two Stardew Valley days in order to be completely built.

In terms of positioning your silos, you can actually place them anywhere on your farm, but it is recommended to place them on the corner parts. You don’t have to worry about them being too far from both the barns and coop – remember that hay hoppers exist and they serve as the connection between the silo and you. So putting your silos anywhere on your farm will be connected to the hay hoppers.

Another reason why silos should be placed on the corners of a farm is to avoid getting in your way and to maximize your farm’s space. Silos only occupy 3 by 3 tiles, so if there is enough space, several silos can already be situated together.

Other Tips in Storing Hay

Aside from using the silo to stock hay for winter and rainy days, you can also opt to store them in a chest. If you think that your silos are almost full and you don’t have enough crafting ingredients to build another one, withdraw some hays through the hay hopper and place it in the chest. In order to do this, either your farm or coop must have a vacant feeding bench.
