Three Legged Woman – How To Get Virginia as a Companion

In Sons of the Forest, you are actually given the ability to have companions. Initially, you only get your deaf/mute friend Kelvin, but later on, you can get a three-legged woman named Virginia as a permanent companion! In this article, we will talk about how to get Virgina as a companion and why you definitely want her on your side!

For people who play alone, these companions are an absolute lifesaver. You no longer need to worry about gathering food and materials all by yourself anymore. Kelvin, the starter companion, can only gather and point at cannibals. Thankfully, Virginia is a bit more…aggressive to the locals.

How to Get Virginia as a Companion

The three-legged woman, Virginia, is unlocked as a companion by allowing her to slowly warm up to you. Unlike the various items in the game that you need to find in caves or dig sites, Virginia will find you! She often approaches the player early on but won’t be unlockable until after a few encounters.

Some people have reported that Virginia shows up as early as your first day!

Now, when she does approach you, make sure to holster your weapons. This is “G” on PC. Do not act aggressively toward Virginia; this will scare her and make her less likely to be your companion. Similarly to Kelvin, you have to treat her right.

On the first encounter, don’t approach her. Virginia will run away scared if you do. Don’t worry about this. As long as you haven’t attacked her, she will return soon.

Eventually, after enough time, Virginia will start doing things around you. Dancing, harvesting, eating, etc. This signals that she is slowly warming up to you. Continue to avoid frightening her.

You will know when Virginia is your companion when she approaches you and gives you some form of material. From then on, she will gather for you and sometimes check in on you by approaching.

Note: There are some rumors that Virginia prefers warmer areas, aka, not the mountains. But this is just what the developers have said and isn’t substantiated yet.

Why You NEED Virginia as a Companion

Virginia fighting mutants

Probably the #1 reason why you should absolutely have Virginia as a companion is for how strong she is in combat. Because of her mutant background, Virginia can wield two weapons at once. This could be the shotgun, pistol, or whatever you decide to equip her with.

Moreover, Virginia can also gather for you. And since NPCs don’t require maintenance, some might argue that the NPCs are even better than other players.

How to Give Virginia Gear

At some point, Virginia will come back and check in on you. Here is your best opportunity to give her some gear. Simply hold E when she approaches, and you will hold out the gear you can give her. Drag and drop the gear onto her.

You can use Q/R to cycle through clothes and weapons.

If you have a GPS tracker, you might want to put it on her as she does wander from time to time. You won’t want to lose your badass dual-wielding babe when the cannibals start attacking. So unlike what most people say, definitely put a tracker on your mutant girlfriend.

So that’s how you get Virginia, the three-legged woman, as your companion in Sons of the Forest and how to give her gear. Having companions in this game is a big step up from the first game, and Virginia is poised to be a less-annoying version of Lydia.
